Today we’d like to introduce you to Benny Bassett
Hi Benny, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have always loved music. It took me a couple different careers, and about 10 years as lawyer to finally realize my dream. I started playing music professionally with my band Vintage Blue in Chicago. We won the opportunity to play on a rock and roll music cruise, and met people around the world. Upon returning home we decided to break up, and I used that as an opportunity to finally launch my own solo entertainer career. Since then I have released three albums, played over 1,000 concerts in 46 U.S. States and 8 countries, and driven over 600,000 miles. I love what I do, and I am lucky to have so many people that support me on my journey.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Choosing to pursue a career as an artist of any kind, necessarily involves struggles. They can be different for every person. Sometimes the struggles are internal; creatives may question their own decisions, skill, or performance. Sometimes the struggle is monetary; how much should I ask for, can I find enough people interested in my art. But there are always struggles. The upside is that artists have a unique ability to express themselves during struggles. So sometimes the greatest art can come out of those very tough times.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a solo performer. I play acoustic guitar and sing, while also doing some storytelling where it is appropriate. But I think the biggest thing I do apart from others is in my songwriting. These days it seems most modern artist pursue trends. It is why we see people copying dance moves, or songs that sound the same as the last 1000 songs that were just popular. I was once told by an accomplished musician to remain true to myself, and I took that to heart. I continue to produce and create music that I love, and rather than force a square peg into a round hole, I let the art guide me wherever it wants to go. I allow the music to guide my decisions, rather than trends.
How do you think about luck?
I do not really believe in luck. I do believe in being prepared. When you are prepared for different outcomes you can be ready for opportunities, and able to pivot or protect in times of challenge.
