Today we’d like to introduce you to Bella Mfon.
Hi Bella, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m Bella Mfon, a self-taught visual artist from Abuja, Nigeria, with five years of experience working with acrylics and textures. I began my artistic journey to express emotions I couldn’t verbalize, and over time, it evolved into a mission to create relatable pieces that connect with others on a deeper level.
I discovered my passion for painting in 2018. After struggling with depression for over ten years, I started painting as a form of therapy. During one of my therapy sessions, I met an art therapist who suggested that I try painting since I wasn’t comfortable talking about my feelings. He provided me with a few brushes and a canvas, encouraging me to create whatever came to mind. The experience was comforting; it brought light into my life and helped me feel better without going through traditional therapy.
I contacted the therapist afterwards and expressed my desire to continue painting. He guided me on where to purchase art materials, marking my artistic journey’s beginning. I then turned to Pinterest and YouTube to expand my skills, recreating anything that captivated my interest.
Eventually, I stumbled upon the pour/fluid technique that I currently use. With this technique, it’s just me, my emotions, and my colours.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My journey so far has been quite interesting. I wouldn’t describe it as smooth, as there have been numerous learning opportunities along the way.
One of the challenges I’ve faced is balancing my career as an artist with a demanding job. As an emerging artist, I’ve taken on a side job that provides financial support, allowing me to create art without the pressure of making money from it. This setup enables me to create from the heart.
The art industry is filled with talent. I learned the hard way that breakthroughs do not happen overnight, and I constantly remind myself to enjoy the process because it is a journey, not a race.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in texture and fluid techniques. Pour painting, or fluid art, involves creating artwork by pouring paint onto a canvas rather than carefully painting a subject. With these techniques, I express my emotions through colour.
My artwork is primarily abstract, focusing on mental well-being and healing. I use vibrant colours and textures to reveal hidden emotions, helping viewers confront their inner struggles and realize they are not alone. What sets me apart is my commitment to mental health advocacy; each piece serves as a tool for emotional reflection and healing.
One of my proudest achievements is witnessing how my work resonates with people, providing them comfort and validation.
My long-term goal is to establish a foundation where children can use art as therapy, helping them navigate their emotions through creative expression.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I have learned is to believe in myself and trust the process. As a self-taught artist, I have faced struggles with imposter syndrome. I begin creating for myself, but then I feel this need for external validation to be recognized as an artist.
Over time, I have learned to be comfortable with not being accepted by everyone. I continue to create for a greater purpose: the ability to connect with people on a deep emotional level. Art allows me to express emotions that words often fail to capture, and the greatest reward is knowing that my creations can provide comfort, reflection, or healing to others. This realization reminds me that my work serves a purpose beyond aesthetics; it touches lives and encourages people to embrace their inner journeys. When viewers look at my work and feel understood or seen—especially concerning their mental well-being or personal struggles—I feel an incredible sense of fulfilment.
