Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley White
Hi Ashley, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My name is Ashley White, owner and designer of Styledentity. Styledentity is a jewelry and accessories brand that I started in 2011 almost by accident. One day I decided to make some earrings for an outfit that I was wearing to a special event and everyone loved them! That same week I thoughtlessly set up an Etsy shop to sell a few pair and the rest is history. 10+ years later I’m slowly and steadily building the brand of accessories that I always wished existed.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
For the most part, it has been a smooth journey. However, owning a business comes with its challenges, and running one that depends on selling art is even more demanding. As a true Virgo, I meticulously plan everything within my control. But when does anything ever go according to plan?
I started my business in 2011. As we increasingly rely on social media for exposure and sales, I find myself struggling with the lack of time to manage it all. Additionally, as a small business, it’s not always financially feasible to outsource social media management. Taking time away from creating to handle social media is a common struggle for many artists. I hope we find ways to barter services in the near future.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As I reflect on my creative journey, I am reminded of the profound impact that art has had on shaping my identity and guiding my path. From the formative experiences of childhood summers spent immersed in artistic exploration to the founding of Styledentity, my artistic practice has evolved organically, driven by a deep-rooted passion for self-expression and innovation.
At its core, my work is a celebration of craftsmanship, culture, and connection. Inspired by a myriad of influences, from global traditions to personal narratives, I strive to create jewelry and home decor pieces that resonate on both aesthetic and emotional levels. Through a fusion of traditional techniques and contemporary design, I seek to blur the boundaries between artistry and functionality, inviting viewers to engage with my creations on a visceral and tactile level.
Central to my practice is the belief that art possesses the power to transcend boundaries, bridging divides and fostering empathy. This ethos is exemplified in my exploration of diverse mediums, from jewelry crafting to collage making. Each medium offers a unique language through which to communicate my vision, allowing me to weave a rich tapestry of textures, colors, and narratives.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I love being involved with community institutions. I have had the pleasure of doing two shows at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, a space integral to my development as an artist. I love the people that I have gotten the chance to meet during these shows and I would love to partner more with museums across the country.
In terms of support, the number one method is shopping on my website. However, continuing education is a tremendous part of being an artist. If there are any programs to take classes across mediums I would love to hear about those opportunities.
Lastly, working with other creatives in the social media space would be amazing. Content is so important in this current ethos and working together to support one another could be groundbreaking.
