Today we’d like to introduce you to Angelia Hubbard.
Hi Angelia, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I began my career as a professional dancer and instructor/choreographer and then progressed my career into an all around movement professional. I found Pilates early on in my career and became certified to teach all aspects in the method. I continued adding more movement practices to my knowledge by adding yoga certifications, personal training and many more. You could say I just love teaching others how to move their bodies in safe and effective ways.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not in any way been a smooth ride. Working to become a professional dancer takes a very intense drive and passion to be able to carry your love of dance into a career. You can ask any professional dancer why they go into the industry and it is certainly not for the financial reward but because we truly love it. I had a lot of negative feedback along my journey as a dancer which can be tough to hear. I had times when I did step away but I always come back to teaching dance and choreographing. The other aspects of my career teaching Pilates and Yoga have been a bit of an easier path but they too have had their challenges as well. It can be hard to find your teaching style in industries that are very much part of the fitness and wellness spectrum. Pilates and Yoga can be advertised in so many ways that are just not how I teach. It takes time to really find your niche and the clientele that truly appreciate what you do and find the results in their bodies that you get to help them find.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I have been teaching movement for almost 27 years. I started with teaching dance to primarily young dancers and then when I was in my early 20’s I found Pilates and fell in love with it. I loved the way I could help adults find healthier movement patterns in their own bodies. I started to incorporate Pilates concepts into my dance instruction with my young students and saw a huge difference in their body awareness. I love helping dancers find healthy cross training they can do and relate back to their dance training. This is so important to help with longevity in their dance journeys and I love being part of that. I also specialize in working with clients that have back issues and injuries and helping them re-establish better ways of moving that can help reduce their pain and get them back to moving and enjoying it. I am really proud of the connections I make with my clients and students. I always want my students and clients to trust me and know that their journey is a team effort. My goal for them is to see them feeling great about movement no matter how big or small.
Last year I had a vision to bring a dance convention to the island of Bermuda where I live. I really wanted to have a space for local dancers to come together in one event and learn from local dance professionals. I am so proud to say our inaugural event brought out dancers from all of the dance studios on the island and I brought together instructors from each of the studios on island as well. I was able to have the whole event sponsored by a generous donor so I could offer the convention to local dance students as a free event and be able pay staff. I am huge advocate for dance professionals to be paid accordingly for their time and expertise and I am so thankful I was able to give that to fellow artists on the island. It was a huge moment for me and I am so thankful to be able share my passion for dance with the whole island. I am working to get our 2nd event together for 2025 and can’t wait to see the response and support grow each and every year.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I am a pretty open book. I find that when I am open about who I am and my struggles and successes, it can help those around me feel more comfortable. I really love finding those connections with people and I am always so honored when someone feels they can let their guard down when they are around me.
