Today we’d like to introduce you to Will Jackson
Hi Will, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started out playing in bands, then gravitated to recording and mixing those bands I was in, honing my skills throughout the process.
After a little while, and after studying mixing and producing at university, plus other various forms of training, I started to build a business of mixing and producing services.
Through building this, I learned a whole host of other skills including video editing and digital marketing.
In the past few years I’ve worked hard to create a lead gen machine of sorts to allow me more time to get on with doing the music stuff, the stuff I’m most passionate about and best at!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There’s lots of trial and error involved, especially in the advertising department. My biggest challenge has been learning to effectively market myself.
It can feel a bit hopeless at times when you’re not getting the results you want, and spending good money in the process. But that’s just the process of refinement. If you keep on going, you get the results you’re after eventually.
I’ve just launched an online commercial drum recording and mixing course – the first thing I’ve ever sold that wasn’t a service, and even that’s a bastard to sell!
Getting people to see the value in what you’re offering can be tricky, but if you constantly test, analyse and pivot, you’ll find what works in the end.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As a music producer, I like to think I’m known for creating emotive, compelling productions. I love creating ‘goosebump’ moments, where the melody, chords and rhythm of a song just click and give you an indescribable feeling of joy and make your head seriously nod!
Those moments can be hard to come by, but they’re gold dust when they do.
As a mixing engineer, my sole goal is creating mixes that enhance the production to the fullest extent. I try to add personality and character as my tastes dictate, without straying from the core feel and tone the artist/producer has created to that point.
I guess my favourite job I’m most proud of was mixing the 20-track album for Sea Of Solitude, a video game released by EA Games, with the soundtrack released under SONY Music.
I think what sets me apart from others in the producer world, is that I’m not a narrow-minded arsehole! The amount of artists I’ve worked with that have told me horror stories about previous producers they’ve worked with… There’s a lot of rookies out there. It’s kind of handy in a way though, as all I initially have to be is a nice guy and I’m already firmly cemented into these clients good books 😅
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
The only minor risk taking I’ve undergone in my career so far is advertising investments. It’s always a gamble when you put money behind ads, hoping they’ll convert to give you a profit.
Like I said before though, if you consistently educate yourself, and study what’s working and what’s not, you can achieve your goal eventually
