Today we’d like to introduce you to Traci Chernoff
Hi Traci, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in New Jersey with two sisters to two loving parents and a deeply embedded passion for NY sports. After graduating from High School, I attended Binghamton University where I earned my Bachelor’s Degree in English Rhetoric. While in college, I further honed my leadership skills while working as an RA and in the Student Association for the Office of the President. Upon graduating in 2014, I started working for Target as an in-store Executive Team Leader focused on Guest Experience and was soon promoted to Executive Team Leader of Human Resources. After about 3.5 years, I left for an HR Business Partner role with the French fashion brands Sandro, Maje, and Claudie Pierlot (SMCP). Throughout my tenure there, I was promoted to HR Manager and then Director of HR for North America, earned my Master’s in Public Administration from Rutgers University, and started my podcast, “Bringing the Human back to Human Resources”. After about 5 years with SMCP, I started working as a Senior Director of Employee Engagement in 2022 for Legion Technologies, an HR Tech/Workforce Management Software company.
As humbled as I am by all of my career successes, my greatest success has been becoming a wife and mom. My husband and I live in NY with our identical twin daughters who just turned one!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
To me, life isn’t meant to be without its challenges – it’s life’s challenges that show us how strong and how capable we are. It’s hard to specify struggles I’ve encountered along the way without telling someone else’s story, but I can share that I’ve learned a great deal from my parents who demonstrated to me what hard work looks like and how to get back up on your feet. Something I hope to teach my children one day is that life is both what you make of it and how you navigate life’s lessons. Certainly, there will always be difficult moments in life, but finding ways to turn those challenges into positive lessons and opportunities is where someone takes lemons and turns them into lemonade.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m an HR professional and have been for the last 10 years – technically I specialize in Employee Engagement since my title is Senior Director of Employee Engagement though I like to see myself as an experienced generalist and senior leader in HR with a robust and well-rounded background for supporting teams and leaders while driving businesses forward. Some people may know me from my podcast, “Bringing the Human back to Human Resources” which is now 4 years old with 200+ episodes! I’m truly most proud of the success of my podcast and my HR career on the whole. I think what sets me apart is something my career readiness clients tell me, which is that I take the opportunity to get to know people as individuals and on a deeper level to be able to relate to them and best support them in their careers. Whether in work or my business, I bring the human back to HR – it is at the core of who I am and how I work. I challenge the status quo, find ways to match business needs and employee demands, and focus all of my effort on building trusting relationships.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
I have a few!
1) Going to the park with my sisters and my grandma – she always had snacks waiting for us and it was such a special, simple time in life.
2) Cheering on the NY Mets with my dad at games each year – Let’s Go Mets!!
3) Learning acceptance at an early age thanks to my older sister – she has Down Syndrome and back in the 90s, acceptance for those with disabilities wasn’t as common or expected as it is today. She taught me how to be a good person and to appreciate the differences in people because those differences are what make us special.
