Today we’d like to introduce you to Todd Hanna
Hi Todd, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
The world of surgery was introduced to me as a patient. 5-years-old. Dog bite to the upper lip. The surgeon who cared for me was incredibly caring and talented. He used sketches to explain the injury and reconstruction. My mother is an artist and taught me to draw and sculpt at an early age so this resonated with me tremendously. I saw how I could use art to physically help people. Ever since then, I always wanted to be a surgeon. The rest is history.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road to any successful position is never smooth. There are always setbacks and struggles. The key is to always keep moving. What they don’t tell you is that the pathway or the destination may change, and that’s ok. Just never stop trying to move forward.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in aesthetic face and jaw surgery. I began my practice doing a lot of head and neck cancer reconstruction and microvascular surgery. This is where we transplant tissue (bone, skin, and muscle) from part of the body to reconstruct the face. We have to bring blood vessels along with it and reconnect them in the neck to re-establish a blood supply to the transplanted tissue. This type of surgery gives you an unparalleled understanding of facial anatomy and what the body can and cannot tolerate. Reconstruction is the cornerstone of aesthetic surgery.
What I have been successful at is being able to understand someone’s anatomy and their goals, and articulating what changes would be best to help them get the most natural and balanced result. Many times, doing multiple small procedures offers a more natural and meaningful result than just treating one area too aggressively. It’s really about understanding the face in totality, not just focusing on a single feature.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Two things:
1. Our brand colors are shades of brown and beige. They were taken from actual skin tones.
2. Our logo is a face with the acronym HFJ within it (Hanna Face and Jaw). We worked with a logo team for weeks but could not come up with anything that I liked. One night, I sat down with a pen and pad and sketched it in about 10 minutes. I sent it to the logo team and that was it. We kept the inked stroke design to honor the original sketch.
