Today we’d like to introduce you to TJ Cunningham.
Hi TJ, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started my journey as a painter in 2010, but my love for art began much earlier. Growing up in Vermont, surrounded by the beauty of rural America, I was constantly inspired by the landscapes, animals, and the quiet rhythm of farm life. These early experiences shaped not only my artistic voice but also my perspective on the value of hard work and patience.
I studied art in college, but my true education came after graduation, when I set out to make painting my career. Those early years were challenging—art can be a difficult way to make a living, and there were plenty of moments when I wondered if it was sustainable. But I kept painting. Persistence, faith, and the support of others helped me navigate those tough times, and eventually, I began to find my footing.
My work started to resonate with collectors, and over time, I found my niche in landscapes and animal portraits. Painting is more than a job for me—it’s a way to explore and celebrate the beauty of creation. Along the way, I’ve been fortunate to share that passion with others through teaching. Launching The Art Journey has been one of the most fulfilling parts of my career, as it allows me to connect with a global community of artists who are eager to grow and create.
Today, my focus is split between my personal artwork and mentoring other painters through live demonstrations, feedback sessions, and courses. It’s been an incredible journey, and I feel grateful every day for the opportunity to do what I love and help others grow in their own artistic paths.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road, and I wouldn’t expect it to be. Art is a difficult way to make a living, and there have been plenty of challenges along the way. Early on, I struggled to find my footing as a professional artist. I didn’t have much of a network, and like most artists starting out, I had to figure out how to balance creating meaningful work with the realities of running a business.
There were times I felt uncertain about whether I could sustain this career, especially during those seasons when sales were slow, or the work didn’t seem to connect with anyone. On top of that, I had to learn how to navigate the vulnerability that comes with putting your art—and yourself—out into the world.
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is the value of persistence. Painting isn’t just about talent; it’s about showing up, day after day, even when it’s hard. There were moments when I wanted to give up, but I’ve always found that if I keep moving forward, something opens up—whether it’s a new opportunity, a connection with someone who appreciates my work, or a breakthrough on the canvas itself.
The challenges haven’t gone away, but over time, I’ve built a stronger foundation. My faith, my family, and the incredible community of collectors and students I’ve been privileged to work with have been my greatest supports. They’ve helped me stay grounded and reminded me why I started this journey in the first place. It hasn’t been easy, but it’s been worth every step.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m an oil painter specializing in landscapes and rural life, with a particular love for painting sheep and other barnyard animals. There’s something timeless and grounding about depicting these scenes—capturing the quiet rhythms of the countryside, the soft light across a pasture, or the unique character of a single sheep. My work often explores themes of simplicity, connection to the land, and the beauty of the overlooked.
Beyond painting, I’m also deeply invested in teaching. Through my platform, The Art Journey, I offer live demonstrations, personalized feedback, and community studies to help other artists grow in their craft. Teaching has become one of the most fulfilling parts of my career. It’s incredible to see someone light up when they realize they can paint something they didn’t think possible.
What I’m most proud of is the way my work has resonated with others—whether it’s someone bringing a painting into their home because it reminds them of a memory, or a student finding new confidence in their abilities. Art has this beautiful way of creating connection, and knowing that my work contributes to that is deeply rewarding.
What sets me apart? I think it’s a combination of my focus on meaningful subject matter and my commitment to authenticity. I paint what I love and what feels true to me, and I try to bring that same genuine approach to teaching. I’m not just sharing techniques—I’m inviting people into the process, helping them see how much they can grow when they trust themselves and take the time to learn.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
The Covid-19 crisis turned everything upside down, but it also gave me the push I needed to break away from the traditional gallery model, where I was paying 50% on every sale and had little control over my career’s direction. During that time, I ventured out on my own, built my platform, and started connecting directly with collectors and students. It was a leap of faith, but I’ve never looked back. It taught me the importance of taking ownership of my work and trusting that new opportunities often come from the most unexpected challenges.
