Today we’d like to introduce you to Taryn Talley
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Where I started is completely different from where I am today… if there’s one consistent mindset in my life, it’s growth. Growth as a person, growth in my career.
As a person, I have grown exponentially. Quite honestly, I don’t know anyone who hasn’t – although I’m sure there are folks that are pretty steadfast in their ways – that’s just not me.
Career-wise, I started as a creative professional – working on digital design in the early days of the internet – from there I toggled from opportunity to opportunity – eventually moving into a career as a marketer which is not uncommon because design is usually tied to marketing.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Anyone who says it has been a smooth road must’ve of inherited a bit of money.
Personally, I face the same changes as anyone else. Struggling in low paying jobs while you’re trying to get ahead, family issues, becoming a parent and all the challenges that go with that. In my career, I’ve faced five layoffs over the span of 28 years. Each layoff has it’s own challenges depending on what’s going on with the economy. The Great Recession layoff was pretty bad, but the biggest challenge was getting laid off 3 months after my daughter was born — and I was in the store paying for diapers and formula on a credit card because I didn’t have the money.
My personal belief is that these challenges and how we overcome them says a lot about who we are as individuals.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
So I started in design (I graduated college with a BFA in Design) my specialty was designing and building interfaces, websites, interactive elements – like page takeovers. I also spent considerable time on display ads and marketing emails. As I moved up to Creative Director and Managing Art Director my focus shifted to managing the overall design function and teams of creatives.
Taking on my first marketing role – my early focus was on email marketing. I managed large clients focused on travel, commerce and financial services. Most, if not all, of my marketing roles have had a people management aspect. So on top of managing large clients and campaigns – I built and led teams of developers and marketers.
In the last 5 years I’ve pivoted over to marketing roles that handled web, event, social media and content marketing … and I love it!
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
For each of us, success is very different.
For me, it’s having an opportunity to do what I love and doing it in a way that matches my values and ethics.
