Today we’d like to introduce you to Skye Morriseau
Hi Skye, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started playing and writing at age 12 and from there it blossomed into recording music and playing live. I competed in the judges round of American Idol when I was 17 but my audition was never aired. Now, I’m in college, still playing live and writing songs. I plan to move to Nashville post grad and I’m hoping to get a publishing deal so I can make money writing songs. At the same time, I still want to continue to write songs for myself and perform and eventually record my own music.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I’ve been lucky enough to not have anything stopping me from playing music. My obstacle is paying for college right now. I’m only 20, I’ll be 21 in September, and I’m mostly paying for college by myself. My family helps where they can, but it’s mostly just me. I struggle with the fear of not being able to make a living doing what I love and having to put it on the back burner in order to survive. Nashville is a 10 year town, but I’m hoping people will believe in me and that I will be able to do what I love and keep my head above water.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a songwriter first. I love songwriting, the challenges, the story telling, working out my feelings. I get to be whoever I want to be in my songs. I lean mostly towards Americana, which is an umbrella term for folk, country, indie, all that kind of stuff. I love country music- fiddle, banjo, mandolin, guitars. I tried to learn how to bluegrass flatpick last year but I can’t play very fast, so it didn’t go well…
I would say I’m most proud of my songwriting. It’s always come pretty naturally to me but I have really enjoyed watching my growth these past few years that I’ve been in college and surrounded by music pretty much all the time. It has pushed my boundaries creatively and I’ve learned a lot.
I think what sets me apart is that I’m just trying to be myself. I’m not trying to be like everyone else. And that’s not a dig at other artists. I think this generation of singer/songwriters is truly just trying to be themselves and do what makes them happy!
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I’m planning on moving to Nashville after graduation, so I see myself there. I’m hoping to get my foot in with the industry by writing songs with and for other artists, so I want to sign a publishing deal, and then one day I want to get a record deal and make my own music so I can go play live and travel the world!
