Today we’d like to introduce you to Sean “shiz” R
Hi Sean “shiz”, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started my career in the arts as an Emcee in the middle-late 90’s, and was a member of a trio group called Masta-Piece.
I always was into hip-hop and music and art, and would buy black and white composition books to write in from the papi store up the street from my house, when we lived on Erie Avenue in North Philly, and things to sketch or tag on. Although, I was from West Philly, living up North Philly gave me alot of outlook on the streets, and becoming aware of what was going on. In High School, was where my creativity and who I am really caught attention. From designing clothes, to standing out in the crowd being an Emcee and Artist, i became known for reciting my lyrics in the lunchroom and hallways, and known for being “unique and out of ordinary guy. I became popular because, I was more than what they thought I was, Today, looking back at those times, I am stronger in my approach to show my talent and what I am. Still loving and writing music today, its not about just rapping to a crowd, or walking down a hallway to show-off a outfit, its a way of life, and speaks now to my career as a professional artist, With my craft, there’s no gimmicks, or me trying things out, all the world sees me do, from music to design and all in the arts, is who I really am.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road at all on this journey. I spent many of my years in the arts freelancing and working as a wardrobe stylist, makeup artist and Assistant for NYFW. I have seen many days of working for free, being over-looked and working in the most humblest positions possible, To anyone wanting to work in Fashion, Beauty, or Film, I always mention how “Working in this industry, is not as nice as the shots come out..” If it wasn’t for my passion I don’t think I would worked for anyone, or even tried to get out there. I did all I did, because I loved it and wanted to get the EXPERIENCE.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As a professional in the Arts, I work full-time for my platform and business “The U-City Art Walk” which mirrors our future non-profit organization “The U-City Arts Foundation”. With both entities inspired by the Arts, I have single-handily created event programming, and community based engaged projects that uplifts artists, creatives, hand crafters, and small businesses. With this, I specialize in community engagement, and the thriving of small businesses in the promise zone of West Philadelphia, and surrounding areas in our district I am known for my work in the arts in the community as an Artist, Designer and now Community Arts Lead. I am most proud of my recent recognition this year by the city council, and for the “The U-City Art Walk” inclusion for the “Art in City Hall” Exhibition this past Spring 2024. What sets me apart from others is, I am not just an Artist, or a one note situation, but an experienced business man with talent, willing to put myself aside to build something bigger than myself, right in my community and with people who share the same values and heart passion.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
I am happy to create things that are fresh and uplifting. In design, anything i create far as painting, a fashion piece or sketch can give me a jolt of happiness. i love gold jewelry, and daily thrifting keeps me sane. I am happy with A new photo shoot to promote a design or event, or an event that will uplift myself and my peers. I am mostly happy knowing i have played a part in someone’s life by supporting them, especially if its in the Arts. I often have to pull myself back and give myself more, but giving the world my creativity makes me feel good.
