Today we’d like to introduce you to Sabrina Mitchell
Sabrina, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
6 years ago I started baking out of my home just to make some extra money and as a hobby. Today, I am a successful business owner to a bakery located in my little home town! It has been a lot of hard work to get to this point, but I am so excited for this next chapter of my life.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road. This year was a hard one, especially. The same month I opened my storefront was the same time that I lost my grandma, aunt, and uncle. It was very heavy on my heart to lose some amazing people during a time I should’ve been celebrating, but I’ve pushed through it with the support of my family and customers. Opening a storefront is extremely hard as well, with all the rules and regulations that I didn’t anticipate. The other big obstacle in all of this is not being home with my 3 kids like I have been used to. Going from being a stay at home mom to working 5-6 days a week (away from home) has been a huge change for me and my whole family.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I love to make custom cakes, cookies, cupcakes, and cake pops! The other part of my job that I love is coming up with cool new flavors that you don’t always expect. I offer cupcakes samplers at my shop, which is 12 different cupcake flavors. My customers love them to try for wedding cake samplers, take to their work, or even enjoy with family dinner because there’s always a flavor for everyone. I sell things like banana bread cinnamon rolls, gooey butter cakes, protein cookies, and all kinds of stuff you won’t find at a typical store. But my true passion is custom orders. Weddings are probably my favorite because I get to make these huge intricate cakes and let my creativity, talent, and imagination shine.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson learned over the years has probably been to connect with my customers. I have learned that you’re not going to be a successful business without people continually supporting you. I’ll sit down and have conversations with my customers to create that relationship and connection with them. The only reason I knew I would be able to open a storefront is because of the amazing support my community has given me.
Pricing:
- Make sure you get paid for your time. You aren’t just selling your product, you’re selling your skills
- Check out special calculators online, they can break down your supply costs so you can see how much it costs to make the cake. This will help you know how much you need to charge.
- Be competitive with your pricing. Make sure you aren’t underselling or overselling yourself.
- Sometimes the best deal on your supplies isn’t the best option. Invest in good quality stuff because you will save money over time by not having to replace it constantly
