Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan Kovacs.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Poetry has always been a passion of mine and storytelling at the forefront. It wasn’t until I discovered that the two could be combined, that my real story began with writing novels-in-verse. I was inspired by the author Ellen Hopkins and her Crank Series initially and began to understand the capabilities I possessed to tell stories through poetry.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
In the beginning it was a bit all over the place. My first unpublished novel was just a bunch of snipers of a story, written completely out of order in poetry trying to tell a fictional story. After critiques I realized, I needed to try something different and start over with something original and groundbreaking. When I wrote the opening chapter to my first novel, The N.M.E. I immediately had to think of the ending and write it. Once I did, I knew where I had to get and the distance I would need to travel within the story. It wasn’t necessarily received well but it was received with praise. Its unique style and narration set it apart from just about every other novel and it’s premise was harsh. I was originally told it was too brutal and violent for my editors taste and recommended I seek other council. Then I was told it didn’t fit the mold of what people were reading. I had a lot of rejection but it still didn’t stop me. While it may not be as decorated in awards as some of my other works, it is my best selling novel thus far and most talked about.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I believe that my writing works are most known for being different in many ways. Both in style and story ideas, I think many of my readers would agree that what hooked them was the style and the way each book reads. Poetry is manipulative in forcing readers to read words in the way they’re intended to be read. Specific pauses, line breaks, spaces and word placement on the pages distinguish this style from traditional prose. I’m most proud of my Destruction Series novels that take readers on an incredible journey of choice and consequence. I love these tropes that are interwoven throughout the protagonists story and I believe the way I did it to be quite special. It’s not to take away however from the truly unique novel, The N.M.E. with it’s southern accent and first and second person narration–something that truly has never been done before.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I’ve been fortunate to have many mentors in my life. Each of them have taught me valuable life lessons and provided life altering advice at times. There quite frankly are too many to list but many of them have stemmed from my lengthy military career of 15+ years. I have of course encountered many people in life who have taught me valuable lessons over time. I’ve never stopped learning from them because I’ve never stopped listening to them.
