Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Foster
Hi Robert , so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was a teacher for 12 years and didn’t have a good work/life balance. I didn’t have the time I needed to write. It wasn’t until I left the education field and found more traditional 9-5 work that I was able to start writing regularly. I published my first book, Morgan’s Mount in December 2023. I published my second book, Crag Island, in July 2024.
I’m a nature lover and that seems to find a way into everything I write, sometimes in ways I don’t realize until I’ve finished a manuscript.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My struggles have primarily involved time management and money. Like many writers, I have a full-time job. I’m tired when I get home from work and, since I’m not the kind of person who likes to write early in the morning, I do my writing in the evening, after work.
I self-publish and it’s a long complicated process with plenty of ways to make mistakes and fall prey to scams, I hired an editor/guide early on and she’s taught me how to navigate the process. Self-publishing still has a somewhat bad reputation and I’ve been doing everything I can to assure myself that my books are worthy of being on shelves with traditionally-published books.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a writer. I’ve written two Horror books; a novel called Morgan’s Mount and a novella called Crag Island. I’m known for Horror right now, but I’m working on a Crime Fiction novel and I have several Fantasy and Science Fiction ideas as well.
I’m most proud of achieving a bucket list goal in life. I’m a published author. I’ve wanted to publish a book for decades and now I’ve done it twice. My younger self would be proud of my achievement because it’s something he dreamed about often.
I’m a Horror writer who discovered a love of Horror later in life. I grew up primarily reading and watching Fantasy and Science Fiction. These days, I’m finding that my favorite way to write is to blend the three genres together whenever possible.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I live in Portland, Maine and it’s a beautiful small city that feels more like a large town. It has a great art scene and a progressive culture while displaying signs of a fascinating history of immigration and sailing.
Like many places, the rent prices are abominable. It’s hard for a regular working person to afford an apartment or especially a home in the area.
