Today we’d like to introduce you to Paul Farahvar
Hi Paul, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Long story, short? I was a successful lawyer for years until I got the comedy bug and quit my career in law to pursue stand up comedy. Now I am a touring comedian, podcasting and comedy writer, based in Chicago.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Well, I closed my law office on March 1, 2020 to start a national tour, start writing comedy for the Chicago Cubs network and debut my award-winning podcast Singles Only at SXSW only to have the world shut down two weeks later. It was a bumpy start but then opportunities started up again slowly and I am back doing some of the same things I was preparing to do before. It’s been hard but, like anything, you work hard and continue to grind and good things happen. At least thats what I tell myself.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am very proud of my new comedy special, “Middlewestern, Middle Eastern” which was released on April 26th with Helium Comedy Studios. It’s a collection of my best comedy from the last five years and I am eager to see what opportunities arise from it. I am also very excited about my new podcast “Why Are You Awake?” where I get to interview comedians, creatives and nightowls, like myself, about their career paths. I love interviewing people and learning about their journey. I am a good listener who has had some great real-life experiences so I love to learn about other people who, like me, had different struggles and paths to success. I had a great podcast SINGLES ONLY which won awards and was accepted into SXSW but it was time to change. Almost 400 episodes later, I started this new podcast!
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was pretty shy and awkward growing up. I always felt like an outsider but I also craved attention. I would create games and my own fun, and I think I still do that. I loved music and politics. And I had a hard time finding people like me. It’s funny because I always just wanted to fit in and now, I embrace how I am different from everyone. Not a lot of sane people leave a comfortable successful career to pursue stand-up comedy.
