Today we’d like to introduce you to Paugh Shadow
Hi Paugh, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in Washington, D.C. and NYC. My dad used to take me to night clubs there and in Harlem, NY when he would travel up that way. I saw all these performers and was surrounded by a lot of talent. Guess it rubbed off to want to perform and inspire others. I didn’t do much until I got out of High School and went to college and got out on my own and when I saw something I wanted to do I just did it. I did little things with cable access and indie things because the mainstream didn’t want anything to do with me. I worked with CBGBs in NYC to bring underground music to light. I always loved music as well as movies so it was easy for me. I would go to all these clubs in Washington, D.C. and NYC and talk with the artists and try to get them exposure through other outlets I had contact with. When I was in college and the internet started getting big I worked with a buddy to bring internet radio out. Then in 1997 I started internet flowing as I called it. It’s now known as streaming. I was in Hawaii for a stint doing research on Humpback Whales and dolphins and sea turtles and then went to Asia for 4 years where I gathered more and more music as well as running a travel company. I came back to the states to NYC and continued to do things with music and started looking into acting. After 9/11, I met some people doing an indie film and asked what they were doing and they told me and I got onto their film. From there I met other people in the industry some A listers but many D listers. But I worked my way through doing tv and movies. I got tired of not getting bigger roles because as I saw it they don’t hire 6’6″ men to do the lead roles regardless. You still can count on 1 hand how many actors are doing the main role in movies today. So I decided I will finance and produce and make my own films and start putting myself into some of these roles lacking tall people in the industry. Its still a struggle but at least I am doing it my way.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Is it really ever a smooth road? Not unless someone in your family already paved the way. The system isn’t designed for people to be recognized. There are tons of hurdles you have to navigate and even when you have talent its who you know and who you meet and lots and lots of luck for the majority of those of us trying to make it in this industry. If it wasn’t for the predators in the industry, and sincere talent scouting maybe but the truth is you have to be careful and just wish for the best. Lots of talented people I have met that never got a break. As far as I am concerned I am one of them. Especially since 2020. I was starting to do a lot of work for me and then right back to ground zero starting point. So between producers that wanted “favors” to get a role and just not picked for a role I was perfect for but lost the job to someone that was already well known I just decided its time to make my own stuff and hope for the best.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
What sets me apart from many others is I keep plugging away. Some people claim they want this for their life but then when asked to do something always has an excuse why they can’t show up and do the work. Lots of people want things just handed to them. That’s not me. I am willing to work hard I just want there opportunity. I have received roles on TV shows and movies because the person who beat me for the spot never showed. That was crazy to me. I couldnt imagine having such poor work ethic that after given a chance in such a competitive industry someone would think they were too good to show up. I do paintings, I write books and poetry and I make music and act. I have a few companies I have created and I just don’t put all my eggs in one basket. It’s cliche but it holds validity. I specialize in horror movies but if given a chance to do comedy or a serious drama I would jump at the opportunity. I just love doing work that inspires others in a positive manner.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
Support each other. Tell others about your friends’ work. Get others interested in them as well as yourself. Don’t be selfish. Buy their stuff. Work as a community. If you believe in them prove it. It’s all about sacrifice. If they are sacrificing too make it then sacrifice a little to. Lastly, I have a Clothing line. We make suits for men and women. They range from regular suits to one of a kind. We help create a village in Indonesia with the proceeds. We also have orphanages in Cambodia and two in Indonesia. We help over 1,000 kids get an education and become a productive member in their society. We have a bee farm in Indonesia and are trying to expand that all over the world. We have a turtle refuge in Indonesia where we help repopulate the species. We also help with protecting the Humpback Whales in Hawaii. There is a website we created for those of us who lost a loved one and wanted to make a memorial online for them. And then the tv/radio online station I created helps musicians get the music noticed and they make a 50/50 split with us unlike other companies that only pay $.003 per view. It also educates people about how to make movies, learning different languages, making music videos, history and more. We also did a pay-per-view event for St. Jude for children. So basically I am saying I put my money where my mouth is and I help others through the things I enjoy doing in the first place. And if you support us you also support others around the world and help make this world a better place.
