Today we’d like to introduce you to Nemo Chen
Hi Nemo, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m Nemo Chen, an artist who’s delving into lens experiments across still and moving images, AIGC Arts, and image installations. I earned my bachelor’s degree at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and now split my time between Chicago and several cities in China, allowing me to infuse diverse perspectives into my work. It’s been humbling to see my works and interviews featured in international media outlets like Vogue Italia, Harper’s Bazaar, ELLE China, and Cosmopolitan, among others.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Things have been pretty tough since I graduated, the pandemic hit the economy and the industry. It’s really hard to keep the arts journey going while you try to figure out how to incorporate yourself into society. Especially when you are an international student and you have to worry about your visa status in the US. If you know, you know. At that time, I often doubted myself, doubting my value in society and the value of the art industry in society. But later I found that my excellent predecessors also went through similar ‘black box’ periods, where their hard work and careers did not receive the external recognition and spotlight that they deserved. However, they were eventually seen and succeeded, which undoubtedly encouraged me. I want to give myself some time and believe in daily efforts of accumulation.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My artistic journey revolves around exploring the relationship between individuals, groups, and spaces. I’m fascinated by how people adapt and transform within changing environments, and this interaction and confrontation between external circumstances and inner selves is a recurring theme in my experiments. For me, art is a personalized narrative and conceptual expression, with light serving as my primary medium. I draw inspiration from my own experiences and moments of self-discovery, aiming to provoke thought and evoke emotions while addressing existential questions in my artistic narratives. Having my works showcased in renowned venues worldwide like the PhotoVogue Festival in Milan, the CICA Museum in South Korea, and the Chicago Fine Art Salon. Seeing my work featured with other great artists, has been like a dream come true.
