Today we’d like to introduce you to Natasha Garcia
Hi Natasha, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Natasha Garcia, a native of Albuquerque, NM, has transformed her life from years of struggling with addiction to becoming a dedicated nonprofit executive. With a deep passion for giving back, Natasha now leads efforts to support reentry programs in New Mexico, helping justice-involved individuals successfully transition back into their communities. Her personal journey fuels her commitment to making a positive impact and providing others with the opportunities and support they need to rebuild their lives.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Some of the struggles along the way have been overcoming the stigma of addiction, rebuilding trust with loved ones, and navigating the challenges of transitioning from recovery to leadership. Natasha also faced financial hardships, self-doubt, and the obstacles of starting and sustaining a nonprofit organization. Despite these challenges, her resilience and determination to create meaningful change have driven her success in helping others on their own paths to recovery and reintegration.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
At NM Reentry, we are dedicated to supporting justice-involved individuals as they transition back into society. Our work focuses on providing essential services such as housing support, job development, life skills training, and mentorship to help our participants build stable and fulfilling lives. We specialize in working with individuals who have experienced incarceration, addiction, or other significant challenges, and we create personalized pathways to help them achieve self-sufficiency and success.
We are most proud of the impact we’ve made in the lives of hundreds of men and women, helping them find not just a second chance, but the tools and community they need to thrive. Many of our participants come to us with little to no support, and seeing their progress as they secure housing, employment, and sobriety is incredibly rewarding.
What sets us apart is that our work is deeply personal. Many members of our team, including our leadership, have lived experiences that align with those of the people we serve. This firsthand understanding allows us to approach our mission with compassion, authenticity, and a genuine commitment to making a difference. We strive to meet people where they are, fostering an environment of trust and empowerment.
What were you like growing up?
I grew up surrounded by hard work and craftsmanship, spending countless hours in the shop with my brothers. My dad was an upholsterer, my grandpa was a detailer, and my uncle worked in automotive, so I was immersed in the trade from an early age. My brothers and I shared a special bond, but when I lost my brother at a young age, it turned my world upside down. He was my best friend, and his loss left a void I struggled to fill.
After his passing, I faced the challenge of going to school alone. I played basketball in middle school, finding a brief escape in the game, but by the time I reached high school, I had fallen into addiction. That period of my life was filled with pain and uncertainty, but it also shaped the resilience and determination I carry with me today.
