Today we’d like to introduce you to Natalie Wilson
Hi Natalie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have always been in love with photography. Growing up, I’d point to almost anything and tell my dad how that would be a great picture. One day, he got me my own camera to use, and the rest led me to where I am today. I started with film and had to evolve to digital, but I have loved every bit of the journey. I’ve had the pleasure of developing film in a dark room to watching the beginning of digital format. It gives me a whole appreciation for what photography means. I am passionate about my work and love what I am able to capture. It’s been a lot of ebb and flow, but I’m proud of how I got to the point I am at with my business today.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Life in general isn’t an easy road. If someone tells you it is, then they are selling something. I’ve gone through a divorce, moves, and being a single parent. I’ve come to rely on my photography as my extra source of income, so as with any small business, there’s competition and struggle. That is natural though and how we grow. The true test is sticking to your values and not settling on lowering your worth to keep up with an oversaturated market. Like I said, there’s an ebb and a flow. Busy seasons come and they go, but your work, style, ethic will keep people coming to you.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I mostly shoot weddings and elopements. That is not the entire scope of my capability, but that is what I am known for. I love it though! I think most people see my work and are afraid to inquire about family sessions, but I enjoy getting to work with families and children as much as I love shooting weddings. It breaks up my creative rut and also sets me apart from a typical family photographer. Not everyone likes to pose for every single photo, so I tell my families to have fun with one another and let loose. It definitely breaks the tension some feel in front of the camera and brings out the true authenticity of each person. I love being friends with all of my clients too! This has been such a huge part of my business. No one is just a client. I try to be personal with everyone and provide an experience that isn’t cookie cutter. I’m able to have fun with my clients! Letting myself loose helps with being creative and spontaneous.
Any big plans?
No big changes at the moment. I love working in New Orleans. Louisiana is home and I don’t expect to leave yet. I am hoping to keep growing and reaching new goals for myself.
