Today we’d like to introduce you to Myriam Khouzam
Hi Myriam, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
As far back as I can remember, I never felt like I fit in. Right out of university, I worked with youth and unemployment, but the structure of a 9-5 job didn’t suit me. I joke that I had a mid-life crisis in my early 20s. The truth is, that challenging time was the beginning of a winding and still unfolding journey.
Over the last 20+ years, my path has taken me through studies with many Traditional Healers worldwide, extensive yoga and meditation training, Shiatsu and Natural Nutrition training, Trauma-Informed counselling, and Somatic Therapeutic approaches.
I am always learning. In October of this year, I will have completed the yearlong Compassionate Inquiry Professional Program offered by Dr. Gabor Maté and Sat Dharam Kaur ND. This graduate-level trauma-informed psychotherapeutic approach “gently uncovers and releases the layers of childhood trauma, constriction and suppressed emotion embedded in the body, that are at the root of illness and addiction. The Compassionate Inquiry approach aims to bring compassion, respect, acceptance, insight, healing, freedom and connection.”
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has definitely not been smooth!
My path has been challenging on a personal level because the work I offer demands a solid container. In order to hold space for others, I have to recognize my own triggers and not let my judgements or beliefs interfere. I have and will always continue to do deep inner work so that I can better show up. I’ve found that self-work comes in waves. It’s not easy to face our inner darkness when that wave swells, but it’s such powerful growth!
On a more practical level, I’ve also moved more times than I can count, which also meant having to start over again and again. These moves have been challenging on many practical levels, but also emotionally. It is interesting how symbolic this can be – to start over, to reinvent oneself. Not an easy task, but one that drives to even deeper intuition and knowledge.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My work has evolved over the past decade into a more consolidated offering. I now mostly work with individuals, offering a combination of Therapeutic Somatic Approaches that I call Embodied Integration. Embodied Integration helps people manage their stress, reduce their anxiety, develop better coping skill, integrate held trauma, repattern dated behaviors, and be more mindful and present in their day-to-day life. This happens through a reconnection and an increase in emotional and physical understanding.
My personal growth and understanding is based in this ongoing work, applied over a lifetime! This allows me to meet individuals with knowledge gained from multiple trainings, and more importantly, from a depth of personal, anchored practice.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
As a queer cis-woman of colour of North African descent. living in Attiwandarionia (Hamilton, ON) as a second-generation, unintentional guest on Turtle Island (Canada), and more specifically on the traditional territories of the Erie, Neutral, Huron-Wendat, Haudenosaunee and Mississaugas, I am committed to taking only what I need, leaving more than enough for those who come after me, tending to this land, and learning more about Indigenous communities and their past.
I love working with people of all backgrounds and experiences, which makes life so much richer. I’m grateful that I get to offer my services in person (Hamilton, ON), and online, which allows me to meet people from all over the world!
