Today we’d like to introduce you to Mychel Sullivan
Hi Mychel, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Hi, my name is Mychel. I began my journey as an artist when I was 6 years old, tracing Dragonball Z characters and all my favorite superheroes. Fast forward 15 years and I’m starting to wonder what my purpose in life is, and what I have to offer the world. It was at that time I decided to jump all in and follow my true calling for art and creativity. I had no idea where that path would take me or how long it would take; I just knew I would be satisfied with whatever the outcome was because it meant I stayed true to myself. Looking back I think it was the best decision I ever made.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Has it been a smooth road? Absolutely not, but that’s not always a bad thing. Throughout this journey I’ve learned many lessons, about myself and life in general. One thing I used to struggle with was staying motivated even when it seemed like no one noticed my efforts. Eventually I realized that my passions are not based on external validation or praise, and that I always need to remain my own biggest fan & critic. I think that’s the beauty of life; often times we learn best from the rocky moments that test our character and perseverance. Or the moments that make us step outside our comfort zone. One thing art has taught me is to always believe in myself, no matter how crazy it may seem.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I make aesthetics, plain and simple. This comes in many different shapes and forms; including paintings, digital art, graphic design and clothing/apparel. If I had to pick one piece of work that I’m most proud of it would have to be my original “Michael Myers” painting. That was my first official painting in my art career, and it honestly scared me a little when I finished. Not because it was terrifying like the movies, but instead because it gave me a glimpse of what I’m truly capable of when I put all my mind and heart into something.
One thing that sets me apart from others is that I do not care about likes, followers or outside recognition like most people do. I won’t lie, being recognized and praised for my work does feel good, but I truly create for my own pleasure first and foremost, anything else is just extra to me. If I was the last person alive on this planet and no one ever saw my work I’d still be an artist.
How do you think about happiness?
When it comes to art and creativity, it makes me happy to see the impact artists have on the world around us. Artists play an influential role in everything the world consumes; from the clothes we wear, the cars we drive, to even the cover art on your favorite album. I love seeing someone else’s vision come to life and being appreciated by multitudes of people; that’s my driving force and motivation as a creator.
Two of my greatest goals in life are to leave a lasting impression on the world through my creativity, and more importantly to inspire another future artist to follow their passions and dreams the same way I did.
And thus the cycle continues.
