Today we’d like to introduce you to Mindy Davey
Hi Mindy, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My name is Mindy Davey and I’m an independent artist from Buffalo NY. I’m going to be 12 years sober in September. At a young age growing up I had 2 brothers, so I was a tomboy and because of that I had a hard time finding friends. I was picked on often by certain “Clicks” in school, so I felt I would never be able to fit in. During homecoming week, I was invited to a party and I thought that was my chance to make friends, get to know other kids from the school and just fit in. When I went to that party I was introduced to OxyContin for the first time and instantly I became addicted. All the problems going on in my life instantly went away. The next day I was looking for more because I wanted that same feeling I felt the night before. That’s where my addiction began. I started using daily and one day got introduced to crack cocaine where yet another addiction came into play. I was addicted to pain pills and crack for years. I was arrested my first time and was placed in a 6th month probation. I couldn’t use during that time because I was being drug tested weekly. During the 6 month probation I discovered “Pump It” a legal synthetic drug that gave you the same effect as cocaine did but more powerful. Once my 6 month probation ended I started using street drugs again. I ended up using until I was arrested in September of 2012. They placed my in a 6 month rehab treatment. I waited a month to be placed into treatment and when I was in there my first week, I knew something was off. I took a pregnancy test and found out I was pregnant. I knew it wasn’t just me anymore on this road, it was my unborn child. So I completed my 6 month treatment and went on to have my daughter Arianna. Life as a new mom, navigating through this new life sober was hard but that’s where music helped me. I started playing music at a young age. I watched my mom growing up play acoustic guitar in the church band. But when I became addicted music wasn’t important to me. When I got into rehab I actually was watching the TV waiting to be seen by my counselor and I saw Justin Bieber on the Ellen Show. He inspired me so much from that interview that I went home and picked up my guitar for the first time in years. I fell in love again with it and it became my escape away from everything. I started writing songs and going live singing on an app called Periscope. We grew to 15k+ followers! I ended up trying out for a contest called “The America’s Got Talent Front Of The Line Pass”!! We ended up winning with 48,000 votes. Sending me to Ohio to audition for the show one on one with a judge from America’s Got Talent. We ended up going to the second round in NYC but unfortunately didn’t make the camera round. While I was there I encountered a homeless man who lost everything in a house fire in NY. His family got a room in a shelter but had no room for him. I went and grabbed him a bag of supplys he could use. I told him to keep his head up and that there are good people out there that will help you in the time of need. I ended up writing my first song called “Peace” all about that encounter and the homeless in general. We need more love in this world. I started singing the song live on Periscope and that’s where I met my manager Mike Letica. He heard my story of my addiction and recovery but also loved how I cared a lot for the homeless. Mike called me one day and asked me to come to MN to speak at detention centers, rehab centers, schools and do some events for the homeless. So I said yes! From that day forward Mike was my manager and began growing my career. We ended up meeting Grammy Nominated Producer Nathan Walters in 2019 and signed a contract within a few months of talking to record at Capitol Records in Hollywood California. After we recorded the track “Drifting Away” we went to Nashville Tennessee where we met with Grammy Nominated Director Israel Anthem to do a music video shoot for the song. Which you can see on youtube on my channel. We began just making music and I invested in cameras to do my own photoshoots and videos. I met a really group of guys in Jamestown NY at Lost Music Studios near where I live so we began recording there for all my projects. In 2020 when covid hit I ended up meeting Mama Jan AKA Jan Smith Grammy Nominated Producer and vocal coach of Justin Bieber, Usher, Nicki Minaj and many more. She began working with me on my vocals and proper techniques to build my vocal chords more. In October of 2021 we headed to Mama Jans studio in Atlanta GA where we recorded my single “Destiny”. You can also listen to that out everywhere on all platforms. Over the past few years I released some singles, talked about my sobriety at various events and just continue to make an impact anyway I can to as many as I can.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Not at all. It was really hard my first few years in sobriety. I would have non stop triggers that would be followed by cravings. Memories I had burried away I thought was healed but in reality I never really healed. I just burried the pain. When I got into the music industry I actually realized how bad my scars were. I had a sponsor who helped me through the ups and downs and helped me find the right help to treat my internal scars. I had nights where I couldn’t sleep and I struggled mentally but my sponsor and support team really helped me through it. Mental health is a hard thing to struggle with and I struggled even more when I entered the music industry. Without the support of my manager, sponsor, family and fans I really don’t know what would have happened. I always say surround yourself with people that you can rely on when you need them most. Have a plan for those bad days! YOU CAN beat and fight through those bad days!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m an artist who sings mainly pop music but I like to rap a little bit on some of my tracks. I write music that’s real, about my life struggles and what I go through. Being vulnerable in my songs and even just speaking out about my life is what I love to do. It’s hard putting yourself out there but the amount of people I’m able to impact with my music and story really makes it all worth it. Especially in the world we live in today, we need more positivity and love. I’m really proud of my recent song “Destiny” because it really shows how far I’ve come in life from where I once was as an addict. What sets me aside from others is how real and open I am about my life and what I’m going through.
What’s next?
Honestly I have been taking my time with music and just navigating my way through life. I recently moved so that was a huge change for me. I took some time away to really just enjoy life and get ready for this chapter in this new place I’m in. I have lots of new music on the way that I’m working on and a surprise adventure I’m planning to announce beginning of next year- Which I’m super excited for. So stay tuned…
