Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has not been smooth. I would say it’s been a lot of twists and turns. I’ve struggled with figuring out how to navigate a career in film. A lot of things are trial and error here. I’ve failed, some projects don’t get done sometimes, and maybe they are shelved. Sometimes you’ll get the job, sometimes you won’t. I always tell people if they want to be a director, that role has no ladder, it has no direction to follow. You have to do all that yourself. Making films, talking to people, and making things happen. It’s like driving in Boston, you take one left turn, and if you mess up the route you have to go all around again or maybe you make it to the destination in one peace. I don’t know I like a good analogy haha.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a filmmaker. As of right now in order of favorite things I would say, I love directing, producing, and editing. I’m known as the film guy, the movie guy or the guy that makes videos either title works I think it’s pretty cool to be known for something.
I’m proud of the most recent short film we’ve done titled Bailando. A story about someone who falls in love with a dance instructor. It’s very Dirty Dancing, Step Up vibes. It features Dominican culture as well as I am Dominican. One of my goals as a filmmaker is to feature culture used in everyday life and adapt that on screen. It’s very important to see yourself on screen I think. I could talk about that for hours.
What sets me apart from other filmmakers is I think I like to consider myself multifaceted, I do a lot of different things in film. They always try and tell people to stick to one thing and that’s it but the truth is, film has so many avenues, what do you mean just choose one you know? I love bringing people together also, film is a team effort to me. I used to do a lot of this stuff on my own but when I found friends and we all have common goals, it’s a wonderful feeling. I want to tell more Afro-Latino stories in film. I feel like there’s not enough, I want my films to have those experiences and for the next generation of filmmakers to feel seen.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
