Today we’d like to introduce you to Melinda Matticoli.
Hi Melinda, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am a dancer, choreographer, filmmaker, educator, and director from Skillman, New Jersey! I started dancing at a small studio in my town, and from there, I began training at Broadway Dance Center’s Children and Teens program, which was extremely helpful for me in jumpstarting my career! Today, I get the privilege to travel for work, teaching throughout the country, and getting to work on film projects throughout New York City and Los Angeles.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not been a smooth road at all! Throughout my life, living with anxiety disorder has created a lot of challenges throughout the way. As much as it has given me a lot of days that felt endless and taken over a lot of decisions that I have made, it also has helped to push me to keep going and doing more and more. I feel like struggles and everything in this world happen for a reason, and I would not be where I am today without those tough moments.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a contemporary-focused choreographer and educator. I am passionate about creating spaces that allow artists to authentically express themselves, have fun, and be able to learn in all aspects. I want everyone to feel challenged in my spaces, while simultaneously feeling like their voice matters. I love leading spaces because it gives me the opportunity to grow and learn from my peers.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I feel success is being able to achieve something, no matter the outcome. I feel our society has put so much pressure that we have to have big successes all the time, but I feel that even the small things like getting out of bed or having a meal, that is success too!
