Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Lynch
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m a self-taught artist, residing in central Arkansas. I started painting almost nine years ago, and after experimenting with a variety of subjects, finally found my niche with atmospheric landscapes.
I left a full time office job four years ago, and have been working to build my brand by finding gallery homes, consistent marketing, and participating in exhibitions and competitions.
I converted a spare bedroom into a home studio, which is where I spend a good part of each day.
I’m blessed to have the support of my husband and many friends.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Although I’ve enjoyed the journey of becoming a full-time artist, it has not been a smooth one. When I worked full time, I would normally come home after a long day, and try to squeeze in an hour or two of painting late at night.
My hours are still long, but I love what I do. Occasionally I do suffer creative block, as most artists do. When this happens, it really helps me to work on several small paintings at once..normally 5 x 7..with a very minimal palette of three or four colors. I use a large brush and work quickly. It’s very satisfying to complete several paintings, even if they aren’t great.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My subject of choice is landscapes. I mostly work in oil, but occasionally use inks, charcoal, and cold wax.
I would say I’m pretty well known for my moody landscapes. My pieces are minimalist and almost always have dramatic skies. I create both atmospheric and abstract paintings, and sometimes they are a mix of both. I love painting in this loose style, and find they work well with both traditional and contemporary decor.
I’ve worked hard to get my work into galleries and develop a following, but I’m probably most proud of how determined I’ve become. I honestly didn’t know I had it within myself to pursue this path. I’m constantly working to better myself in every aspect, whether it’s painting, learning, or marketing.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is to paint what you love. I admire so many artists, but try not to compare my work to others. That’s not to say I’m not in awe of their skills..I definitely am. I just think it’s very important to stay true to myself.
