Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcia Ibay
Hi Marcia , it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My journey into photography began in 2014. I didn’t have any formal training from an art or photography school; instead, I was fueled by a burning desire to start a business I could be proud of. After purchasing a professional camera, I found myself immersed in learning everything I could about photography. I took a few classes at a local art school and dove into YouTube videos to grasp not only the technical aspects of camera functions and composition but also the business side of photography. To be honest, I quickly realized that understanding the business side was just as important—if not more so—than obsessing over the technical details of the camera.
I decided to take a leap of faith and posted an ad on Facebook, looking for a couple willing to let a new photographer capture their wedding day. The rest, as they say, is history!
On a personal note, I’m a single mom—starting my personal life journey as a teen mom at just 15 years old. Since my first child was born, I’ve made it my mission to defy the teen mom stigma and show my kids (I now have three!) that with determination, grit, and perseverance, success and happiness can follow.
Today, I run a successful elopement photography company, and I’m excited to be training my daughter to take over one day. She’s a natural artist and attends one of the most prestigious high schools in Louisiana that focuses on the arts. When she eventually becomes CEO of Ibay Photography, our future couples will be truly blessed to work with her!
Over the past ten years, my team and I have photographed over 300 elopements and micro-weddings. I also coach others on how to run a successful and thriving photography business. To say I’ve been blessed is an understatement. I feel incredibly lucky to have a career doing what I love!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’d say the ride has been pretty smooth, and honestly, the best times of my life have been over the past ten years. I’m grateful to have the time and flexibility to enjoy a fulfilling personal life. I feel lucky to maintain a schedule that allows me to spend quality time with my children while also carving out moments for my mental and physical well-being.
The main challenge I faced was during the COVID lockdown when I had to assess how to run my business with no couples coming to New Orleans. Thankfully, it all worked out, and we’re thriving more now than we were before the pandemic!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We have a fantastic niche specializing in elopement weddings in New Orleans, and we take pride in offering photography that is both artistic and timeless. What I’m most proud of is the exceptional level of service we provide to our couples. Most of our clients come from out of state and even from other countries, and they rely on us for everything. We’re always happy to help in any way we can—no request is out of the question! We truly love all of our couples and are dedicated to making their special day unforgettable.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
In my opinion, luck is never a factor in personal growth and success. It’s all about drive, ambition, hard work, and determination—along with a bit of true talent—that shapes a person’s future.
