Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsay Ross
Hi Lindsay, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Yes so I was born in 1992, in a tiny town in Ohio, I was born, and was a middle child. l was loud and weird, and didn’t fit in! She felt out of place in her small town, and just wanted more. When I was little every year I was the Angel in the Christmas Pageant that wanted to be Mary. Haha. (Eventually I was Mary) Anyone who grew up in Church knows that’s the part! I was eager, full of ideas, imaginative, but also vulnerable. And that vulnerability set me up for a lot of disappointments!
I’m learning to look back and love that little girl because she made me who I was. I want to protect her and tell her story, and give her the room that she never had growing up. I think what got me where I am, were the women or mentors that saw my potential, and pushing me past limitations. My first mentor was my grandma who encouraged my elaborate ideas, play, and my “diva” attitude. I also have to credit my mom for telling me, “do whatever makes you happy”. I mean of course there are exceptions, but she just wanted us to be successful!
I started in cornfields feeling out of place and not knowing what I’d do with my life! Staring out in the horizon dreaming of something better. I started in church plays and skits, to painting sets one Saturday afternoon at my college. I’m only in New York aspiring and working towards this artwork because of my drive and I had good teachers that saw something in me I couldn’t see in myself.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’d love to say that’s been the case, but no it has not been a smooth road. For instance I started out at a Christian University and then transferred to Cleveland State in 2016. My first year in college the head of the music department told me I should reconsider because my classmates were ahead. That’s just one case where I was overlooked or discouraged rather than encouraged. In college I began to also unpack a lot of baggage, and so my mental health has been an obstacle.
In 2015 I was academically dismissed from my University because my grandma had passed causing me to really spiral downward, but to be honest when I started at Cleveland State and started Theatre I finally felt at home. My obstacles were my grades, family, but I think it was expectations and myself! I’m learning and continuing to hone the practice of putting myself first!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My work is still a work in progress! Acting my number one thing so at the end of the day I ask myself, what do I need to do for my craft today. Whether that is looking for auditions, looking for a monologue, or doing my singing exercises. Doing my yoga/walking! Even just getting out and observing the world is practicing your craft.
Outside of acting I specialize in writing, tech work, and singing. I’m proud that I finished my first solo show and produced in last February in NYC. I’m currently working on furthering my script so I can perform it again and I’m also working on developing two other scripts! I’m working on producing a play with my best friend! Most recently I was in a short play for Immigrant Theatre Playwright’s Festival, and I’m working backstage for a staging of the Rainmaker. I’m willing to do a lot as long as it’s a good script, and aligns with my vision!
What makes you happy?
What makes me happy? Oh gosh! I can name so many different things. A sun setting over the ocean or city! Being in nature, a perfect song, baby animals, having a night at the theatre, sharing a cup of coffee and good conversation with someone. But I think what is my biggest piece of happiness is whenever I get spend time with someone I love!
We don’t get a lot of time with the people we love so every time I get that time I count my blessings, I literally stop time in my head. My people inform my work and myself. They define me, but they are vital for my growth and moving forward. I just love the many little blessings God has placed in my life.
