Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Trivison.
Hi Lauren, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My name is Lauren Trivison and I have been a content creator for almost 6 years. I got my start the summer before my senior year of college when I created an Instagram account for college age outfit ideas. Around that same time I took a content marketing internship and quickly fell in love with entrepreneurship. Before I knew it I was focusing time each day to my Instagram page and slowly yet surely grew my following from zero to 1,000 and then to 10,000.
At the 10,000 follower level, I stayed stagnant for a good nearly 2 years. In that time I graduated college, took a few jobs in social media and sales and still took a risk on going full time in influencer marketing. I was so passionate about my work that I just knew I had to take the risk and see where my career would lead me. After about 8 months scraping by, my page finally grew to 35,000 followers and I felt like a legitimate influencer for the first time.
Fortunately, a few months later my page grew again to over 80,000 followers! I couldn’t believe my luck and I finally found community in women who needed size 10/12 fashion inspiration. After college, I gained some weight and found the midsize niche to be the community for me. In this group I learned how to dress confidently as a woman who didn’t know where she fit in online.
Today, my page hovers around 80,000 and its less about the numbers for me. Instead I care about my audience and building relationships with my followers. From sharing my daily outfits to chatting about heartbreak and lifestyle changes as a 20-something, my life and business are so intertwined on social media. I love getting to be vulnerable while reminding women that when they look good they feel good. I believe having a niche and putting people first will only lead to personal success online.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Social media has not been a smooth road. I technically got my start in 2016 as a YouTube vlogger and never built much of a community over there. I was teased in high school for my platform and I gave up many times over the years as it became too much to juggle alongside my other responsibilities.
When Instagram came into my life, it was a little bit of an easier sell but I traded teasing for online bullying from strangers with regards to my body. It was hard watching myself get picked apart by people I didn’t know and when viral videos came along there was always that dark side of my appearance getting torn to shreds.
Another struggle I faced was the uncertainty of pay and how to manage my finances as an entrepreneur. I definitely struggled for awhile there and sacrificed a lot of relationships and my social life for my work. It’s hard to balance work and play when they are so intertwined. Plus there are many droughts that come when you aren’t a mega influencer. I also found it challenging to keep people interested over the span of 5+ years. You inevitably fall in and out of fashion so to speak and when you are at the mercy of an algorithm its challenging to be yourself while also doing what your brand needs.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a midsize fashion creator at my core because as a size 10/12 woman, I know firsthand how difficult it is to dress fashionably while also dressing for a curvy body. For the first few years of my career, I was wearing a ton of neutrals and really following fashion trends of the time. As I got older though and stopped dressing in a way that made me look small and boring, I actually found my personal style. Now, I like to think I am known as an individual midsize fashionista who isn’t afraid of wearing voluminous and colorful outfits. I want my style to be representative of who I am as a person and I want younger women to look up to my page as a place where you can be yourself through your clothes.
In terms of what I am most proud of, I think it’s learning to be carefree and wearing whatever I want regardless of my size. Growing in pant size in front of a camera is not an easy thing to experience and it’s such a joy to not care anymore. Instead I like to wear what feels authentic to me and if people don’t like it, so be it. I’m fiercely proud of myself and how far I’ve come as a creator and no one can take that from me.
Overall I think my personality sets me apart from others. I like to be funny, bold and myself. I also as I mentioned before like to be unapologetic and use fashion as an outlet to feel my best. As someone with mental health struggles, there is something so powerful about taking time to dress up for the day and making myself feel good in my appearance. It’s made me strong and its given me a light that so many resonate with.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I recommend finding mentors through passion projects and internships. I have mainly worked with women in my career and I try to align myself with successful women so I can learn from what they have done. I also recommend taking time to build genuine relationships with these mentors. Its important to cultivate a relationship and slowly develop a connection instead of rushing into a mentorship role.
As for networking, I recommend going out to events as often as you can and getting face to face with others. I have become the biggest fan of networking as it’s helped my confidence and self esteem as a creator. I also take time to reach out to new people each week and put myself out there. The more I can share my brand and talk highly of myself, the better my brand will do overall. You never know where a connection will lead you!
