Today we’d like to introduce you to Kiki Slaughter.
Hi Kiki, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Art has always been an integral part of my identity, making the journey to becoming an artist feel like a natural choice. From age 7, I was fortunate to have a mentor, Karen Shea, who introduced me to various art mediums and styles. She taught me art techniques and inspired me to see that a professional career in this field was achievable. My official journey as an artist began at The University of Virginia, where I undertook an independent study in my final year. The only requirement was to hold an exhibition at the end, and the success of that show provided me with the confidence and affirmation I needed to pursue painting professionally. After graduating, I attended The Sotheby’s Institute in London, where I earned my MA in Contemporary Art History. The program offered insight into the diverse career paths available in the art industry, and it reinforced my belief that being an artist was truly my calling. I recently celebrated my twentieth year as a professional artist.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I faced health challenges for years, starting from post-delivery complications after my first child, followed by struggles with the Epstein-Barr virus and Lyme disease. At times, these issues were debilitating, keeping me from going to my studio and leaving me with barely enough energy to get by—just managing the bare minimum. It was challenging, but it gave me a new perspective and fueled my determination. I now appreciate my job and health more than ever. Spending time in the studio and having the energy to be creative is truly a gift.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a painter best known for my expansive color-field compositions that explore the fundamental process of painting. My work is rooted in intuitive mark-making and draws from the rich visual traditions of color theory and action painting. The practice of painting fuels my inspiration, making my method vital to my creative expression.
Combining my love for interior design and art, I’ve recently developed a collection of wallcoverings and textiles. I’ve always appreciated the artistry in designing beautiful spaces, which, much like painting, involves layering colors and textures to achieve a harmonious and distinctive composition.
Whether I’m actively painting or conjuring new ideas and patterns, my creativity drives me. If there’s a purpose to my work, it’s to infuse the world with more beauty through art. I aim to produce pieces that evoke positive emotions in viewers, hoping to share the vibrant energy that inspired their creation.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
One of my most cherished childhood memories, possibly my very first, is being surrounded by a vibrant field of daffodils stretching as far as the eye could see on a beautiful hill nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains. I was with family and friends, and the air was filled with laughter and the sweet scent of blooming flowers. As I looked around me, I felt a deep sense of wonder and enchantment in the presence of such beauty. It’s a feeling that I still carry with me today.
