Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Lawson

Hi Kayla, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.

My photography story starts from a humble beginning, that’s for sure. Once cellphones began to include better cameras and images, I was constantly taking photos. And not the typical selfies, I was using it to capture -what was to me anyway- art. In my early 20’s I had a request from a cousin of mine to take pictures for her Senior Photos. I only had a cell phone and had not even thought about owning an actual camera at that time. Looking back on that project, I can still say that the images turned out pretty amazing for only using a cellphone camera and editing apps. Though let me tell you, thinking about shooting photography with my phone today would be a huge absolutely not. Fast forward a couple of years and my boyfriend at the time (now my partner and husband for the last 14 years) had a nice Nikon and lens that he would let me use and practice on. He was into photography and was very talented at landscape photography: he had some great work. I used his camera to capture my family mostly which led to taking my brother and sisters’ Senior Portraits. My hobby soon turned into taking the leap to work with strangers offering Family Sessions. After 8 or so years of shooting families and individual portraits I took my business to the next level and registered as an LLC. My clients kept returning year after year and for the last 3 years I have shot many weddings, families, and even business content shoots. My husband is my assistant and second shooter, we make a great team and I love that we can do this work together. This year we purchased more gear including a drone as well as an upgrade to our second camera and lens in order to offer videography as well as drone footage. Today, we offer Wedding packages, videography, Family Sessions, Individual Portraits, Business Content, and Month of Coordination. I love what I do and the clients I have the pleasure of connecting with through my work is a large reason why I enjoy the business I’ve created.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?

I can honestly say that it has been a pretty smooth road. I have always been good at managing my work/life balance so I’ve never been overwhelmed or overbooked. Being able to own my own business means that I can schedule and take on clients within my own set timeframe. As a stay at home mom who also own another business and homeschools my kiddos, balancing all of my jobs is important but something that I thrive at.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?

As a photographer, I really consider my work to be art and always look for creative ways to capture special and authentic moments of the people I get to work with. I really specialize in making my clients feel comfortable in front of the camera. Let’s face it, most people feel awkward and uncomfortable being photographed because it really is difficult to act normal in a not-so-normal situation. I really want to capture the authentic moments, laughter, and relationships that my clients have and I do that firstly by being open around them and showing my positive and fun self. I truly care about others and want them to know that I am someone they can communicate with and feel authentic around. I guide clients through actions that make them laugh and as the session flows they open up and actually have fun. I love showing them my camera display of real time captures as I take them to show how natural they look through my lens. This always puts them at ease and also gives them a glimpse into what I see artistically. I will also add that I am an Empowerment & Activation Life Coach, Energy Healer, and Psychic, so I’m very good at bringing out the confidence and personalities of my clients through my ability to communicate and intuitively interpret each individuals wants and needs. The skills that I have through my other line of work definitely play a role in my interactions and capabilities when it comes to working with others and creating my art.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?

As a wedding photographer I not only offer full Wedding Packages but also Micro-Wedding Packages and Elopement Packages. Each of my couples is unique and I love creating options that work best for each of them. I am also a traveling photographer and no distance is too far. I’ve been to some truly beautiful places capturing love stories and am always open for an adventure.
