Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathy Erwin.
Hi Kathy, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Kia Ora, or Hello from New Zealand 😃
My name is Kathy Erwin and I sailed from California across the Pacific, and am continuing my adventure around the world. I am passionate about yoga and provide yoga sessions in remote island countries along the way. My sessions are often recorded and uploaded to YouTube for others to download or participate in. I thoroughly enjoy the richness of this sailing/adventure/travel life, now proud to enter year 4. I look forward to all the people I meet and hopefully touch with the gift of a special yoga experience.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As I prepared to leave California on our 44 foot sailboat, Sea Bella, I considered the workout items that I would need to pack for our journey. I decided there wouldn’t be room for free weights and it would be too hot for running in the humid towns we visit. The old yoga mat got packed and we set sail for Mexico, entering the serene Sea of Cortez. This transition to boat life was quite a shock, to say the least. However, by the following year, I happily adjusted to life at sea and ready to focus on my physical and mental health. A few days a week I would find a shady beach for a stab at yoga. A few friends and I would lay out our mats, and fumble our way through some stretches and sit ups, as I had not been trained as an instructor yet.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am now happy to say that I am a licensed Yoga Instructor, with 2 years experience under my belt. I fully enjoy sharing this practice with friends and locals all around the world. My online videos are also available on YouTube.
My goal is to inspire people to join in my Yoga practice of flexibility, energy and great physical and mental health. We get centered, rejuvenate and heal the body and mind. All levels, ages and abilities can do it. We begin with breath work and a short meditation. I guide a gentle Hatha warm up on the mat, developing full body flexibility with a few yin healing poses.
I decided to include a unique and stunning visual resting SAVASANA experience at the end of my Yoga videos with the stunning island photography, drone footage of breathtaking views and peaceful music.
Many clients rewatch my online yoga videos daily for their healthy morning routine.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
Being a cruiser, (someone who lives and sails full time on a boat) it is inevitable to meet other like minded cruisers with similar needs and desires. Imagine an ocean bay with 20 sailboats anchored right near a beach on an uninhabited island in the South Pacific. This may be a low lying choral island without any hills to hike or roads to take a morning run. Of course there are no gyms or yoga studios! Since boat life can be quite sedentary, exercise was quite a thing. My cruiser friends would ask and encourage me for a morning beach yoga session. They were always so supportive and grateful whenever I could lead a peaceful Yoga experience in the shade of the palm trees. They were my very first clients and I so much appreciate their support.
