Today we’d like to introduce you to Julia Loglisci
Hi Julia, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hey I’m Julia, A full time photographer and business owner based out of Victoria, Canada.
I am am born and raised in this beautiful city, and I like to think I have that “home town advantage”, but in all honesty, I have worked hard to get to where I am. I grew up with a very passionate, Italian family. I love to cook, play soccer, and practice yoga. I have an amazing community of friends and I love to travel and take my camera all over to world.
I am a full time photographer specializing in portraits. I love photographing people and telling their stories. I just recently opened my own photography studio, called Good juju Studios, and I also own an Elopement Wedding planning company called Pop Up Weddings Victoria. I love being self employed and running my own businesses. I get so much fulfillment in working for myself and creating my own destiny. It’s very empowering!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I went to school for Journalism and received my diploma in Communications. I studied photography and video production, but I always thought that I wanted to be a journalist, so I ended up working in Radio. I was always so excited of the thought of being on air, and working in a journalism type industry, but I quickly came to realize that the industry is not as glamorous as one thinks. I became over worked and underpaid, and not very passionate about what I was doing on a day to day basis. Photography was always a side hobby, but it wasn’t until I got laid off from my radio job that I hit a pivotal moment in my life- do I try this photography thing full time or do I get a job somewhere else? I slept on it and the next day made the decision, to try my best and throw everything I can into working as a full time photographer. Now I own three thriving business and make more money working for myself than I ever did working for anyone else. I made the choice to pursue my true passion, and I grateful every day for it.
The one thing people don’t understand about being a creative is that when you hire us for a job, our work doesn’t yet exist. We have to create it. It’s simply just an idea or a vision. With our knowledge, experience, equipment and expertise, we are able to create a final product which is what the client is paying for. It’s really interesting working full time as a creative person, because there is a fine line when it comes to turning your passion into your career. Once I became busier and more well know as a photographer, my work load started to pile up. With much practice, I have been able to create a very happy work life balance, and not allow myself to get too burnt out simply because I am more selective with my clientele the busier I get. As a creative, I have created quite the life for myself, full of passion, love, excitement, travel and empowerment.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m know as the, “sexy photographer”. I love shooting boudoir. It’s a very empowering style of photography. It doesn’t matter who is in front of my camera, I still thrive in providing a safe and fun experience for everyone. My mission statement is simple. “I want to create empowerment through human connection”, and I’m really lucky that I am able to accomplish that with boudoir photography.
I also love photographing lifestyle portraits for professionals as a lot of people use my photos for their online businesses. I’ve also been getting more into commercial style work and shooting for real estate developers which has been fun and creative. I also love photographing weddings!
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Networking is a huge part of my job. Thankfully I am an extravert at heart, or a social butterfly as my friends call me. You can throw me into literally any situation and I can guarantee you that I will get a client out of it. I love shaking hands and meeting new people. I’m never really awkward or anxious in new situations, and that has proven to be really important for my business. I love continuing my education and every year, participating (either taking or teaching) a photography retreat/ workshop. This allows me to sharpen my skills, get more experience by learning from others, and exploring new technologies within my industry. I wouldn’t say I have one specific mentor, but I do have other photographers that I very much look up to. Over the years, I have reached out to these mentors and worked very closely with them and it’s safe to say that I wouldn’t be where I am in my photography career if it wasn’t for them. I learned best from a one on one and small class setting. I learn by doing, and repeating, and practicing. I am very much a hands on learner and it’s important to find others in your industry who can teach you new skills in the way that you learn. Think of it like your love language. In order for the relationship to work, your partner needs to love you in the way you like to receive love. The same theory can be used in your professional. Find teachers who can educate you in the way you feel comfortable absorbing that information. Find people you can relate with and who you look up to because that’s how you will truly learn. I believe we are meant to collaborate not compete with one another.
