Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenna Matsumoto.
Hi Jenna, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Like many other artists and kids, I was always drawing when I was little. I wasn’t exactly sure what I wanted to do until the time came to figure out where I wanted to go for University. I figured I’d want to go to culinary school or learn how to professionally bake in France but it all seemed so daunting. I stuck with art school and thought I’d figure it out in college, which was definitely a trial and error but that was the fun of it! During my studies, I started taking on graphic design outside of school. I wasn’t learning what I knew I needed to so it was certainly a catalyst to where I got to now. Taking on graphic design as a career has been so exciting and frankly overwhelming. I’m happily growing through each opportunity I’ve since taken on. Learning to trust your opinion while learning a new skill with little to no guidance is incredibly strengthening and encouraging for those who are in the same position as I once was.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not but it’s lead to valuable experiences. On the personal side of those struggles was working in retail / food industry was an emotional challenge and very testing on one’s drive. Within my short career, I have faced many challenges in my first corporate job. Learning that specific office mannerism and being the only graphic designer for a national based company was truly a testament to my abilities.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I now specialize in graphic design with an illustration foundation. I’m happily, newly employed as a graphic designer for Snipes and have been incredibly proud of my journey and growth.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
Like many people in gen z, I’ve accumulated a short attention span so unfortunately I haven’t gotten too invested into books or podcasts. One thing I still keep near and dear to me is cooking and baking as a creative outlet outside of my job. I couldn’t recommend it more as it has helped me gain a personal experience with other cultures and a healthier relationship with food!
