Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Soto
Hi Jason, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
In 2018, I embarked on an exciting journey to promote a YouTube vlog by Harlem rapper Unkasa. Tasked with designing all the promotional material, I found myself diving into the vibrant world of Hip-Hop media. To boost Unkasa’s visibility, I contacted numerous Hip-Hop platforms, hoping to secure a feature article highlighting his vlog.
Several sites showed interest but requested someone on our end write the article. Seizing the opportunity, I took on the challenge and penned the piece myself. The articles were published, and to my surprise, a few sites invited me back to write for their platforms.
Covering a mix of mainstream and independent artists, I found the underground scene more stimulating. I was captivated by the raw talent and unique stories the artists often shared. After two years of writing for various platforms, I wanted to focus exclusively on the Indie Hip-Hop market.
I created Rap Olympus Media at the end of 2020, and it became a platform dedicated to showcasing the talented rappers and producers often overlooked by mainstream outlets.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
We faced several obstacles early on, but the biggest challenge was earning the community’s trust. These artists invest so much into their careers and frequently encounter people looking to exploit their vulnerabilities.
The indie hip-hop scene is tightly knit, and word travels fast. A platform known for shady business practices can quickly ruin its reputation. We had to prove our dedication to the culture, show that we were absolute fans of the art form, and earn their respect by honoring their craft.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m the creator of Rap Olympus Media, a hip-hop platform dedicated to showcasing independent artists worldwide. We highlight artists and their music by sharing their journey with the indie circuit. Additionally, we operate Rap Olympus Radio, an online station featuring a bi-weekly 2-hour show every other Sunday from 5-7 pm EST. Between shows, the station runs a 24/7 rotation of over 200 songs from artists with whom we’ve built strong relationships.
These relationships are what we are most proud of. We share a mutual respect for one another with every interaction. Although music media can sometimes feel like a thankless job, the love we receive makes us feel like a vital part of the culture.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Many people would be surprised by the amount of work done behind the scenes at Rap Olympus Media. We design cover art and promotional materials for our close clients, ensuring their projects have a professional and eye-catching presentation. We also act as connectors within the hip-hop community, building bridges between artists to facilitate fruitful collaborations. We strive to support their creative processes in every way possible, whether by offering advice, providing resources, or simply being a sounding board for new ideas. We’re committed to doing what it takes to bring their art to life.
