Today we’d like to introduce you to Hailey Way.
Hi Hailey, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My story isn’t linear. Like many others, I moved out of my small island town in search of opportunities in the big, daunting city. As I continued to follow my heart, I found myself years later in a new city, in a new state. This happened more than once. The thing is, no matter where you go, there you are. You’re always faced with yourself, and whatever you’re chasing has been within you all along.
Over the past year, I’ve been learning more about myself without the immediate influence of those around me. After years of “following” others on their life paths, I’m finally spending time with myself, building my independence, and reconnecting with my muse. This shift has given me clarity about the importance of being present. No matter how much you try to time-block your day, you can’t truly control time. Responding to what’s necessary in the moment and following your bliss will bring you closer to who or what you’re meant to be in this lifetime.
I know it all sounds very lofty, but going back to my roots and exploring my personality has grounded me in a mentally healthier version of myself.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has been quite bumpy, I’d say. And no, I’m not talking about the sweet ice cream flavor “Rocky Road!” Life has thrown its fair share of challenges my way—some of my own making and others, like COVID, by God’s will. Still, I’ve learned to see the bright side in every situation I’ve faced.
Like many of my peers, I’ve struggled with money at different points in my life. I had an unhealthy relationship with it and learned my lessons the hard way. Honestly, money management and credit should be taught in grade school! But through those struggles, I became a more resourceful person.
Every challenge, pain, and moment of suffering holds valuable lessons. You just have to open your eyes, stare it down, and ask for more.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a reporter with flair. I love reporting the facts, but I also take pride in delving into personal stories. Whether it’s a long-form editorial or a one-on-one podcast that dives deep into my subject’s life, I aim to uncover the human side of every story.
One of my proudest moments was my first foray into screenwriting—a profile of a SoulCycle instructor, a cross-country transplant, and a former supermodel. Seeing my writing come to life on screen, rather than just reading it, was surreal.
Another favorite piece of mine was about an art exhibit at the Seattle Art Museum that showcased the history of Japanese fashion. It combined three topics I’m passionate about: history, fashion, and a country I dream of visiting one day. Writing it was an absolute joy!
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
As I dedicate my time to writing and other creative pursuits, I’m always looking to collaborate with people from diverse backgrounds. Currently, I’m based in a small island town, but I warmly welcome connections from near and far.
If you’re interested in working with me, I’m accepting volunteer guest writers for my online magazine, Isle Chronicles. It’s a periodical that highlights entrepreneurs, makers, and creatives local to Whidbey Island. Our debut article is coming soon and will feature Langley’s 40th Anniversary of Mystery Weekend. It’s really all about community and the individuals that keep it alive.
Since the magazine is called Isle Chronicles, there’s an exciting opportunity to expand and feature stories from neighboring islands like the San Juan Islands and Vancouver.
