Today we’d like to introduce you to Ginger Rose Smith.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was born and raised in Seattle, Washington so the city life has always been comforting to me. I have one brother and my parents are both landscape architects, so I grew up in a very creative household and was always encouraged by my parents to do whatever I was was passionate about. From a very young age I loved filming what my friends and I were doing even though I wouldn’t post it anywhere. From slumber parties to dressing up my family dog, I was always very into performing, even if just for my family members. I grew up in a household with lots of animals, we had dogs, hamsters, gerbils, rabbits, snakes, and I also competed locally in equestrian hunter jumping. I never really saw myself becoming a lifestyle and fashion creator because at the time it wasn’t a “thing” yet, and my life growing up was very chaotic and eclectic in terms of lifestyle and the house I grew up in, so from a young age I found myself dreaming of what my future home would look like, how I would decorate it differently etc. I vividly remember thinking of this very often–more about where I would live and what it would look like than what my actual future job would be– so I don’t think it’s a coincidence that once I graduated from college and moved into my first actual apartment of my own, that my passion for creating collided with the journey of creating a home, decorating, in to now what is considered “lifestyle” content.
When I was in college, I spent every summer break interning in Los Angeles for various companies including a sorority apparel company called “The Social Life” and Lionsgate, as well as being a part time nanny for a UAE royalty family. Saying yes to new opportunities defintiely put me outside of my comfort zone and helped me grow as a person, which I think is super important when you are young. Since the industry I wanted to be in–media, marketing and entertainment– was not one my parents or family was a part of or familiar with, I was never handed any opportunitues and instead always had to network and work for them myself, which is something I’m very proud of today.
After college I had a few jobs in marketing, all ones that I didn’t like, that were grueling and honestly very eye opening to the corporate world, which I soon discovered I did not fit into. It wasnt until 2020–two years after I graduated– that I started creating content on my own for fun while also working fully remote doing real estate marketing at the time. I didn’t go into it thinking it was a way I’d make money, more so that it was something I enjoyed doing. Once I stopped caring about the people I knew personally seeing my content or what they would think, that is really when my growth started to happen. I never really had a huge growth “moment” on social media or something that immediately gave me a platform so to speak, and for me growth has always been something that has happened slowly over time. When my now husband Joey and I got engaged in 2022, I gained an audience of other bride-to-be’s planning their weddings through sharing my wedding planning journey. Since I havent niched down too much, my content is a variety of things that is basically just my life living in the city with my husband and two dogs. I love fashion, home decor, food and drinks, skincare, and travel, so my page is a mix of everything!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has definitely not been a super smooth road to success. I was not one of the fortunate creators who joined Instagram right as it was taking off, so I have always had pretty slow and steady growth, but I think that is why the audience I have today is so engaged in my content. That being said, there is never a bad time to start doing what you love, and I’m glad I didn’t let that hold me back. For a long time I was working full time as a marketing manager while also building my own brand on social media. As I began to grow, I was taking on more paid partnerships and finding the time to shoot and edit those while also working a 9 to 5 (AND planning a wedding!) was very stressful. I honestly dont know how I did it. Once I was making more doing my own content than I was at my corporate job, I knew I had to give it a shot full time or I would 100% regret it. It ended up being the best decision of my life!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am an influencer or “content creator” who creates video and photography content on both Instagram and Tiktok. I am known for my lifestyle content, as I like to take photos that arent necessarily curated but instead give a raw look inside my home, my relationship what I’m doing, the restaurants I go to, etc etc.
I would say my main niches are home decor, fashion, and lifestyle, which is actually very broad and not niche at all but for me sharing everything I’m doing is more fun than only giving my audience one small look into one thing I do. I gained a big following from my bridal content–which was super fun to share my wedding ideas and bring my audience along as I planned my luxury wedding in Cabo– but once that chapter ended after our wedding, I dove into content revolving around moving into my dream loft apartment with my husband, and we have also gotten two dogs since the wedding, so bringing my audience along for all of that has been super fun! On tiktok I share alot fo recommendations for things to do in Seattle, since I love the food scene here and think there’s so much more to see here than just the touristy spots. I also feel that since I grew my audience slowly over time, they are very trusting of me and I’m never scared that something I post is going to turn them away if it isn’t exactly their niche.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
I think my happiness matters the most to me, because I have in the past struggled with feeling good enough or like my life wasnt enough or always being fearful that I wasn’t doing enough, etc etc. For me happiness means being in a healthy relationship, investing time in my family and friendships, putting my best foot forward when it comes to my work and career, and also finding time to do the little things that bring me joy like going to pilates or getting a starbucks! Balancing it all is hard but so rewarding.
I also try to remind myself that I am extremely lucky to be doing what I love as a full time career and the idea of adding more to my plate is always exciting! Recently I’ve been working starting a youtube channel and experimenting with more long form content.
