Today we’d like to introduce you to Gian Paolo Avanzo

Hi Gian Paolo, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.

I have always had a strong love for music and have always wanted to publish my songs, but I never had the time to give it any thought.

This dream was in a draw and I opened it from time to time to keep some musical ideas and wishes.

Years went by, and as I was enjoying my life without attempting to fulfil this desire, a sense of urgency began to grow within of me.

I believed that until you do something, you can never truly tell how it will work out.
I mean, in the end, I had nothing to lose?

Family and friends supported me because they really enjoyed my songs, but you know—they’re family and friends!

I ultimately made the decision to release my debut album, and this is the result of a life journey that is only now being started anew.

Any listener, I suppose, would want to know how the composer is expressing himself through his compositions.

How does the thought of music make me feel? What inspires me to write music of this nature?

Well, it’s easy to explain and hard not to. I’ll make an effort.

As usual, the spark originates from within. I enjoy variation; hence the majority of my tracks contain elements that seem to be distinct from one another and from the preceding track. It seems as though this is a reflection on revolution or perhaps evolution. Do we not live in a condition of constant evolution? Social, cultural, technical, material, mental and so on…

Even with all of these stylistic shifts, each track nevertheless has a recurrent theme that attempts to offer a slight feeling of consistency.

In addition, I tend to play much of my music with longer than usual pauses between specific sections and as like I’m struggling to locate the correct notes. This is an expression of my inner quest to “live through music,” or to convey the emotions of the time, which can be joy, grief, uncertainty or curiosity.

The intention is to arouse anticipation and enthusiasm in the listener for the upcoming musical segment.

I brought one of the biggest riddles of our existence—what is the universe— and gave it musicality with “Journey Across the Universe.” What gave birth to it? What is our identity, our origin and our destination? Is all of this imagined, or is it real? Is everything self-created, or are we the manifestation of a superhuman intelligence that we refer to as God?

Although I wanted to express in notes what I feel, thinking about “Journey Across The Universe”, listening to my music, each of us can have their own sensations and feel what their imagination suggests… That is up to each of us individually.

I’m hoping you’ll feel the same thrill I do. I’d also love to hear about your thoughts and feelings when listening to my music.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?

During my youth, I spent my free time taking music classes.

Life then directed me towards other paths but I have always preserved and cultivated my passion for music, when work allowed me to.

Over the years I have composed various musical tracks and the greatest difficulty was to feel up to the task of a professional musical composition.

This doubt prevented me from publishing my compositions for a long time.

Then, suddenly, a professional concert pianist listened to my tracks encouraging me to publish them.

At that moment, I realized that the purpose was not to show off an exceptional musical talent but to use what I had learned to express my feelings and sensations.

A further difficulty was to conceive an album whose tracks were linked by a single thread, a single story, a single message.

I thought, what could be more appropriate than a journey through the greatest of mysteries, seen through the imaginary eye of a human being who explores the unknown and its wonders?

The answer was: Journey Across The Universe.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?

Sometimes you should question yourself what matters most to you in this hectic world of ours. I mean, is there really anything you are lacking in life other than family, work, having fun with friends and other pleasures?

Personally, I’ve always felt compelled to express my creativity through poetry and music.

Thanks to technology, I was able to fulfil my aspirations going online and reaching a large audience. Finding out what other people think of what you have done may be both exhilarating and frightening at the same time!

Aside from music, I’ve always composed poems in three different moods: existential, romantic and twilight.

A third composite form of art that I am creating is a blend of all my artistic pursuits, including spoken poems, videos, and my background music mixed up.

What makes me unique among the others? While sharing a common humanity, each of us is still a distinct individual with a distinct identity that defines “us.”

You can sense that my art is opening your heart and mind, which makes me feel different.

What were you like growing up?

I grew up in a normal family living the tumultuous economic boom of the sixties.

My father had his own business that allowed us to live without particular problems, my mother was a housewife, my brother ten years younger with whom I never really bonded.

I have always felt different from the cliché of my family and this made me grow up in a sort of parallel world made of my own rules.

The beauty of the diversity of personalities is that there are no two alike. I imagine myself as a nebula that at first glance is difficult to see but, once discovered, contains bright stars within itself.

I love to think of myself as an individual with a multifaceted personality, curious to explore what is different and to immerse himself in completely different fields.

This inclination of mine pushed me to grow with this drive to differentiate my passions and desires: music, poetry, economics, alternative archaeology and much more.

When I consider the qualities that contribute to my personality, honesty, reliability, humility, creativity, curiosity, and a good dose of reliability come to mind.
