Today we’d like to introduce you to Gary Smith
Gary, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My name is Gary Smith. I am the author of eight books in the Warren Steelgrave series, a book of short stories, and several magazine articles.
I grew up in Hayward. California and spend half the year in Hayward and half the year in my home in a small village in Italy. In high school, I dropped all my college prep classes, deciding to go to work after graduation. The first significant decision of my life and one I have never regretted, I started working as a common laborer a few years later as an apprentice electrician. After nine years, I started a small company that grew into a multimillion-dollar national electrical company. After retirement, I started writing.
It was a great life to prepare myself for writing. Shelby Foote said. You don’t learn to write dialogue in a classroom. You learn about dialogue working in steel mills, construction, paper plants, etc. Paying attention to how people speak. My work history has given me a great reservoir of people’s mannerisms, speech patterns, etc., on which to build characters. Ernest Hemingway was quoted as saying once. To write a very good story. You must have experienced it. My life’s work and living in two countries have certainly prepared me for the Warren Steelgrave series of books.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Life is never a smooth road; I am dyslexic and being a writer it is the biggest challenge. Dyslexic is a challenge I have to struggle with every day I write.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a novelist and write Pollical Mysteries. There are eight books in the series so far and the last four have won six national awards.
As a dyslexic, I am most proud of the writing. awards.
What matters most to you?
The arts matter the most to me. Because art connects people with emotion.
