Today we’d like to introduce you to Felipe Latorre (eddythron)
Hi Felipe, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I guess my story started when I was 7. Back then I had my first encounter with music in the form of a Soprano Sax. I took lessons for a while, and three years later I started to find Electronic music very interesting. In the year 2010 I started to DJ, as clumsily as you can imagine a 9-10 year-old could, and two years later I decided to try a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) for the first time. That moment effectively kicked off this long route towards becoming an artist. That feeling of freedom music software gives you to let your mind roam free and create without any sort of limits really fuelled my excitement. There was so much to learn, there was so much potential in me I was beginning to discover at such a young age. That felt incredible.
The years passed and it was a religious ritual that every day after school I’d go on my laptop and produce a bit of music. That carried on through primary school, then highschool, and then college. And with every passing year it’s become more of a reality and less of an accompanying hobby, which, to me, portrays like a full-circle moment in life.
Now that I’m also working on the press/media side of music, it really feels like everything in my life is aligned to carry on with music being my strongest pillar. Never before had I lived, breathed, and worked music. It was always a side thing, a weekend activity, something for when I had free time from my other responsibilities. Now my primary responsibility is to fulfill the promise I made myself over ten years ago: to change the course of my life through music.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s never easy. I’ve been doing this for close to 15 years, so you can imagine I’ve had many points when I just pause everything and wonder if it is even worth it to keep rowing down this river, given the fact that whenever I try and compare my journey to others’, well, I’ve taken my sweet, sweet time working my way up the ladder. Some find success in less than five years, while I’m here slowly simmering my story. And that’s a major factor during those bluer, more melancholic, reflective days, if you will.
I don’t think people turning down my music early — and not so early — on was ever an issue. I was sure of what I wanted to do and where I wanted to be. I think, as is the case with many, my worst enemy has always been myself. I was so sure of who I wanted to become… until I wasn’t. And I guess learning to hush or ignore those doubting voices in my own head has been the single greatest struggle.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Well, put simply, I make music. I’ve been producing and mixing Dance music for a handful of years now. Nowadays, I have a special love for genres like Trance, Progressive Trance, and Organic House. I go by the name EddyThron, and for Organic House I founded my side project EddyThron pres. Aloft in 2020.
Another thing I do, as I said before, is that I currently work as a Lead Editor and an A&R at EDMTunes, a leading music news website. I remember being 14 years old and listening to song previews on their SoundCloud page and reading their articles, so it’s kind of a huge deal for me to be a part of the brand now.
I would say I feel the most pride from the fact that I’ve been doing this for long enough to consider it a necessary part of my life now. And also the fact that I have not given up. Yes, there have been moments in which I take breaks, and longer breaks if needed, but something always brings me back. Back to the music, as if it was a part of me. I like to word it that way. I know the Felipe from ten years ago would be happy to see where things led him.
A side effect of being here for so long is my other greatest joy, which is how much of a perfectionist I am with what I do. I’ve always been that way, and I think that mindset has led me to learn so much more. I put tons of effort into my projects, making sure I feel satisfied and content to harvest great produce. I take pride in everything that bears my name, and for that, I ought to be my harshest critic.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
It’s not the city I’m based in right now, but Buenos Aires is where my heart belongs, so I’ll talk a bit about it. Honestly, I love it there from the get-go: for a start, my best friends all live over there. Then there’s the food, the Malbec, the green areas, the harmony of a chaotic yet so poetic city, the older architecture against the newer buildings, the clouds passing by so close to you… I could go on forever. It started one time I visited to go and see my role models play a gig, and something clicked inside me. If the whole reincarnation idea were true, I’m sure I was a BA citizen in a past life. Something about that place just hugs me and holds me dearly whenever I’m around, like a lost love of sorts.
I guess what I like least about Buenos Aires is the crawling thought that I have to leave whenever I visit. Maybe one day I’ll get my hands on a one-way ticket, so I can ditch the word “visit” from my lexicon for good.
