Today we’d like to introduce you to Emma Davis
Hi Emma, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have always been an animal lover and studied Animal Science in Undergrad followed by a Masters in Animals in Public Policy. I grew up working with animals big and small. In 2015, my brother started a cannabis delivery and the opportunity to join him came up–so I did! Through building that business I learned about entrepreneurship and what it takes for a business to succeed. I also learned a lot about cannabis and the benefits it offers. During that time my dog was diagnosed with hepatocellular carcinoma, a terminal cancer of the liver. I decided not to do chemo as the vet only gave him a few months to live and I wanted those to be good, vet free months. My brother suggested giving him a tincture we sold. At the time there were hardly any products for pets and no one really knew how to dose them. So I experimented and long story short, he went into remission for 4 years. That was my first clue there was something impressive to this plant. The second clue was, during his remission, I was recovering from breaking my back in a horse back riding accident. I had a spinal fusion and was on heavy opioids–which I hated. Again, my brother suggested to use cannabis to help. I was able to get off the opioids, regain my appetite, and eventually nerve pain went away. Shortly after recovering from my accident I found my wild mustang Mikko, who I was separated from post accident. During that separation he had been abused and was no longer the same horse physically or mentally, but more so mentally. He had extreme anxiety. I knew CBD could help him, but there were no products for horses–still hardly any for dogs. So, I used my connections and experience in the industry combined with my animal science knowledge to create Mikko’s Choice (named after my horse) and bring animal CBD to market.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not! The biggest struggle was a few years ago when my pellet manufacture went out of business without telling me. I placed my largest order with them and when it came time to be delivered nothing came. It took months of chasing them down to get answers, I even went all the way to Colorado to confront them. I was always told it would be ready soon. I couldn’t go somewhere else because they had my money and no one else was making CBD pellets like I was with them. Eventually, I worked my way up to the CEO of the company and got a lawyer involved. I did get my money back, but no pellets. I ran out of all inventory and business was dead in the water for months. It forced me to pivot to a tincture while I sorted out how to source new pellets. In the process I lost a lot of customers and I don’t blame them! Eventually, I sorted out a tincture and new pellet manufacture and have been back on track ever since.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
When I’m not focused on Mikko’s Choice I am involved in animal rescue. I’ve fostered many dogs and currently have a foster horse! I love taking in a single animal at a time and helping them thrive–to me that means allowing them to decompress , train them and show them new parts of life. I love when they get adopted and watching them get another chance. I share about this on my personal instagram @briankangal
What’s next?
I look forward to growing Mikko’s Choice and helping as many animals and their people as possible.
