Today we’d like to introduce you to Ed Hill
Hi Ed, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born in Taipei, Taiwan, I moved to Vancouver, British Columbia at the age of 10. At the time, I thought I was on vacation. 30 years later. I’m still vacation.
In 2021, I became the first comedian of Taiwanese-Canadian descent to release a full one hour comedy special titled “Candy & Smiley” with Comedy Dynamics. The special was named “Top 15 Comedy Specials of 2021” by Paste Magazine and “Best of 2021” by NPR Radio. The special is currently streaming worldwide on Amazon Prime and Apple TV.
In 2023, I made my off-off Broadway debut of my critically-acclaimed follow up Show, titled “Stupid Ed”, at the Tank Theater in NYC. My second comedy special under the same title will be released with Comedy Dynamics on Amazon Prime and Apple TV on Oct 15th, 2024.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
When we arrived in Canada, our house wasn’t completely built and had no heat. All our belongings where on a crate in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and will not arrive for another 6 months. I remember my brother and I slept on a mattress in front of a fire place for months. Due to immigration, I lost all my friends in Taiwan. My first Christmas in Canada, I decided to send everyone in Taipei a Christmas card, and not one person wrote me back. I had to learn to reconstruct myself as a human being at the age of 10: learn a new language, adapt to a new culture, and battle any ongoing racial discrimination.
On my first day of school, I was told by a classmate to “go back to from I came from”. Fast forward to today, being a comedian is not necessarily an accepted and prestigious profession in the Taiwanese community. However, I continue to share my stories with the hopes that the next generation sees it as an viable option and a legitimate art form to express our values. The road has never been smooth, and I am grateful that it wasn’t.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a stand up comedian. I am known for my first comedy special dedicated to my parents, “Candy and Smiley” which was named “Top 15 Comedy Specials of 2021” by Paste Magazine and “Best of 2021” by NPR Radio. The special is currently streaming worldwide on Amazon Prime and Apple TV. I am also a father and the author of the children’s book “Foreverly Spaceship”, which is a book dedicated to my daughter.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
My parents for their unconditional love. My brother for his camaraderie. My wife for her patience and acceptance. And of course, my daughter for her genuine joy that inspires me daily.
