Today we’d like to introduce you to Drew Samuelsen.
Hi Drew , so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve loved stories for as long as I can remember. From early on I’ve always had great respect for anyone who can tell a good story, set up a joke, or write it all down in one massive book. To me the story tellers have always been the artists with real, lasting magic.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has definitely not been smooth as a writer, but neither is life. Once you have something to write about, you need to carve out the time on a consistent basis to do it. It can be a lonely process, but once the story takes on a life of its own, you become eager to return to that world each day to see how it all turns out. Once that happens, it’s tough to stop until the manuscript is finished.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’ve been an English teacher for decades, so it’s been a real benefit to my own writing because I’m always interacting with excellent short stories, novels, and poems. As far as what sets me apart from the others, I still have a lot of stories to tell and I’m looking for new ways to tell them. Sometimes, what’s old is new again, so I find I like going back to the great writers, master’s of the 19th and 20th Centuries, to see how it ought to be done.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Look for people who have has some measure of success who aren’t in the game for mere fame.
