Today we’d like to introduce you to Dreambiig
Hi Dreambiig, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
DREAMBIIG is a creative duo comprised of solo artists YawnyBlew and amir. Connecting at the tail end of the pandemic, our mutual influences and instant dynamic made us fast friends and collaborators. A series of one-off remixes quickly evolved into a full-length album and several EPs over the course of two years. We named our project DREAMBIIG because, as plus-sized, Black queer creatives, we connected over not seeing ourselves in the media growing up, with the exception of acts like Missy Elliot. That early 90s influence, combined with our love of 2000s pop music, inspired an album that serves as a love letter to our younger selves and a collection of anthems encouraging marginalized voices.
Separately, YawnyBlew is a music industry professional who honed his skills behind the scenes over two decades as a songwriter and journalist before releasing his own brand of alternative R&B/hip-hop in 2020. amir., too, brings a lifetime of experience as a fashion photographer and creative director, shifting his skills to music around 2020 as well, quickly finding his footing as a dynamic vocalist and producer. Collectively, we have enjoyed career highs as DREAMBIIG, with major news publications covering our work and several artists reaching out to us for help with their projects.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
YawnyBlew: When it comes to creating music with amir, it’s honestly been one of the most organic creative friendships I’ve ever had. The ideas flow really easily, we get each other’s references, and we really want a lot of the same things. So, in those regards, everything we create feels incredibly smooth. Even when there have been hurdles, our mutual respect for each other and love of the music has continued to drive all that we do together. I’d have to say the only true struggle has been how ambitious we are despite our limited resources. We do a lot with a little and make it look and sound amazing, but it can be hard sometimes. I’m excited to start seeing some income from our work and being able to pour it back into the art.
amir : This has definitely been one of my favorite collaborations. We balance out each other very well and we know how to communicate, delegate and support each other. No collaboration is ever seamless so compromise is imperative which is something we do very well.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
YawnyBlew: I am a Grammy-nominated singer and NME-nominated songwriter who is passionate about uplifting marginalized voices and empowering creatives. I accomplish this through creating music that is unapologetically rooted in my identity and experiences, developing podcast series and discussions that offer tools and resources to other creatives, and helping to develop new music and artists. Our DREAMBIIG project gave me the confidence to step out and create opportunities for myself, tapping into my experience to help others do the same. amir. and I have been applying this approach to several projects we are working on collectively, and it’s refreshing to be in control of the output and to see some return. I am most proud of the work I’ve done this year because it has been both creatively and financially rewarding. What sets me apart from others is my ear for music and my ability to empower myself and others to create the best possible product.
amir: I am a multi hyphenate creative with photography & music production being my main mediums of expression. I am most known for my advocacy with The EveryMAN Project & centering marginalized body types through my lens challenging societal beauty norms. I am most proud of my work with The EveryMAN Project and how impactful it’s been. Knowing that art therapists around the country are using my work to help treat patients dealing with eating disorders is a feeling I can’t even put into words to describe. I am also proud of how I’ve been able to translate my message of self love & inclusion through my work as a musician. Working on DREAMBIIG allowed me to step in front of the camera to be the pop star I always wish I had growing up as a kid.
What makes you happy?
YawnyBlew: Family, my dog, my partner. Making good music with good people. RuPaul’s Drag Race, Adventure Time, a good trail mix and a day at the beach.
amir : My Mom, my friend circle, collaborating with like minded creatives, my alone time, traveling, meditation & a good beach day
