However, this was not always the case, I started as a teen mom giving birth at 20 years old to my son. It was a struggle as two young adults ( My husband and I) trying to pay bills and take care of a child. After years of just making it, I decided to go to school for Surgical Technology. This was the beginning of a new life for me. Once I started working as a surgical tech, I was encouraged to return to school for my Bachelor’s because I was around individuals with various education. This is why your circle matters. It can make or break your life. Soon after, I went to get my Master’s, and eventually my Doctorate. During this journey, many opportunities have come to me. I have managed healthcare facilities, taught at colleges and universities, and consulted for major companies.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. However, my support system has played a pivotal role in my life. There will be people who don’t understand why you can’t hang out and go to parties. So, returning to school with full-time employment and a family can be rough. I had to be dedicated and stay the course. I could not have done this without the support of my husband and two sons.I had the most obstacles during my doctoral program. It required a lot of time. There were times when I thought I wasn’t going to make it. It was an overwhelming experience. However, thinking back…it was all worth it.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am currently a healthcare director.I specialize in infection control, medical devices, and sterile processing. I am responsible for ensuring that the medical supplies and instruments are sterile and ready for surgery. My department is what we call the heart of the hospital. We play an important role in the success of your surgery and outcome. I am known as a change-maker and table shaker. I have been able to come into hospitals and transform the department. This has been done by improving the culture, creating new opportunities for technicians, and being present in my field. I assist the certification board with updating the national tests and standards needed to keep this field safe. I have written many articles to support sterile processing and make our presence in the healthcare platform known.
What were you like growing up?
I am a type A person. So, I like things to be in order and represent excellence. Growing up I had a lot of friends and was well known. This helped to shape me into the person I am today. As some would say I am a social butterfly. My hope growing up was to be a lawyer because I love to talk and solve problems. However, God had other plans for me and I don’t question that plan. I am happy and content with where I am, and I look forward to what’s to come because I am still young and have a life to live.
