Today we’d like to introduce you to Dominque Robbins
Hi Dominque, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
As far as music, I started at age two basically lol. My grandmother would have me in my baby seat at her feet in the choir stand at church in Hawaii. She said I was trying to sing right along with them. I started showing more interest at three and then it blossomed into me playing instruments in school and church such as violin, viola cello piano and percussion/drums. I even got to play for the chamber orchestra in Colorado Springs and behind many gospel and Christian artists around the country.
As far as recording that came officially in 2009 when I got signed to Confidential Records. I put out six mixtapes under them and several singles.
We did end up parting ways but on good terms in fact we are still good friends to this day.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Hasn’t always been smooth. Between being under two labels and a management deal that didn’t work out, I’ve definitely learned along the way, which is why I’ve chosen to be fully independent. I don’t want to be told when to put out music or that my art doesn’t fit someone else’s mold.
I like to work on my own time and release when I feel and believe it’s the right time. Creating my music is like seasons for me. Winter I’m feeling and creating one way the next season it’s something different. That’s where I’m at now and it’s a constant learning process.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
So I am not just an RnB/Pop/Hip Hop artist. I am an audio engineer and producer. I’ve been doing my own music since the beginning but my fully self produced single was entitled “VOICES” I even did a new version almost ten years later. That song to this day is one of my proudest accomplishments because I didn’t think I could do that. I am also an equipment nerd! Lol. I just absolutely love learning about new mics, keyboards, controllers and plug ins to the point I’ll spend most of my time exploring and learning. And saving lol.
What Sets me apart from others is my overall sound. I have almost no one to compare myself to, and it feels great to be in my own world sonically. .
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
Denver is always crazy lit when I come into town! I absolutely love the food, the atmosphere, the museums, and even the new connections I’ve made since being part of the lgbtq chamber of commerce.
The least thing I like is the traffic lol. It is hard to get through town sometimes, but I suck it up.
