Today we’d like to introduce you to Demuir
Demuir, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’m a DJ / Producer / Investor from Toronto, Canada specializing in Underground Electronic Music. I’ve been doing this for 20+ years and focused professionally on it for the last 10 years.
I attribute my growth and success in the industry to consistent hard work and placing more emphasis on my creative value – whereas previous music industry models placed a core focus on signing to certain labels, paying outrageous PR costs, and driving up your social media perception – all while trying to make a living through an antiquated gig model. Over time, I’ve realized the closer you are to the source of money being exchanged, meaning you are an owner of your activities vs. being an employee, the greater the return.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Anything great is not achieved without agitation. Challenges should be expected; learning from them is vital to facilitate your growth.
COVID presented a perceived struggle for most DJ/Producers when the world shut down as we were o longer able to profit from gigs. Still, I saw nothing but an opportunity to establish my creative portal via my YouTube channel, Patreon, and Bandcamp pages as a means to share my music directly with people and monetize everything I create. I also established a vinyl component to my Purveyor Underground imprint.
The pandemic and George Floyd also forced people to re-think their DJ lineups to be more inclusive as the music is premised on, but I think that was just a moment and we continue to see disparities. However, the other income streams are just as financially competitive as gigs in my opinion, and has placed me in a position of not having to accept every gig to live.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in DJ/Producing underground electronic music.
I’m known for creating music in various genres of House music, but heavily known for my Jacking House productions with releases on some of the most sought-after labels in our industry, I’m in a broad range of genres that include Techno, Tech House, Soulful House, House, and Deep House
When it comes to accomplishments and what distinguishes me, I’m most proud of not conforming to the perceived rules of this industry that only benefit a few. I think artistic integrity is the foremost strength artists can develop and it allows you to take care of the music so it can, in turn, take care of you. So, sharing what I’ve learned with others looking to increase their skill set to eventually release music consistently and successfully has been especially rewarding.
I do what I design and want for my life. Period.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Biggest lesson is that you don’t have to conform and that your audience is out there waiting to connect with you. There are 8 Billion people on this planet, it would be remiss to think there is only one definitive path to your success and happiness.
