Today we’d like to introduce you to Darrell Watts
Hi Darrell, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am still in the building process. I started taking photography seriously in 2023, but I been a photographer since 2005 during my junior year in high school. When I started to take photography seriously, it was my brother Darren that attracted the idea to me that ‘photography is your thing! What are you doing with these photos? Show the world and quit leaving them in a stash to collect dust!’ Ever since then, I started to form social media to post my photos and a website to attract attention. It has been hit and miss. I was unemployed from May 2023 to October of 2024, that was one and a half years of thinking of my next move. I had instantly started attracting people on social media with. my photos I did. Everything is falling right into place, hoping that it will continue to fall into place. The plans I have developed has worked in my favor so far. It’s all about consistency, perspective and hard work. Believing in myself was the only idea at the time I had, and it hasn’t let me down.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Mostly, yes it has. I do have some struggles. Trying to be a photographer can be challenging, and my biggest struggle has been trying to convince clients/people that my work is worth it. I am an introvert and the most challenging struggle is cold email or cold calling potential clients, but it’s my company I want to build and it’s something I enjoy doing. The other struggle I had was trying to fund my photography, as I mentioned earlier I was unemployed and it was hard trying to attend different events to extend my network and meet other photographers. But the key is always being consistent and believing in yourself. I have never gave up that sight of mind because if I lose, then I fail, and failing to me will always be your best friend at any stages of your journey.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Absolutely! I am a photographer of Flash Watts Photography. It’s still in the beginning stages of process. What I say I specialize in is turning boring photos I take and creating them into inspiring, therapeutic photos. If you need an inspirational lift when you are down, my photos provide that. If you are in the mood to look at photos when you are listening to music or just bored, my photos provide that. If looking at photos are therapeutic to you, then my photos provide that also. You never know who you are inspiring when you are doing what you love. I’m known as the guy that always have to take photos. I have always been that guy to just take photos of any and everything. When you look at my Instagram page, you see mostly nature and moon shots. What I’m most proud of is pursuing my photography career and I’m in my late 30’s and not ashamed by that either. What sets me apart from others is I’m deep into my photography, rather if it’s portrait, nature/outdoors, indoors, astrophotography, I’m the one.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Luck plays a big role. As they say, “just a little luck,” is all you really need. Professionally, luck plays a little bit of a role but it really takes hard work, consistency and persistent. In my life, luck plays a bigger role but I really just play things by ear. There is so much in my life that I can control and not control. I just know sometimes it can be difficult to have luck in your life. The more you work hard both in your life and professionally, the better you can achieve your success.
