Today we’d like to introduce you to Daimon Hampton
Hi Daimon, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up on the on the Southside of Chicago, with my mom and brother. My mom is an artist and taught me at ton about art. I’ve drawn since I was a child and I’ve always loved cartoons and comics. When I was in high school I spent a lot of my spare time, studying the comics and animation, taking classes at Gallery 37 and working with True Star magazine. Then in college I joined a group of artist under the name UTB and published my first comic with Steven Scott called 12 Gauge Stereo. Then I worked with a company with Rotten Apple Comics but that ended awkwardly causing me to start writing my own comics: Hold Me Down and ReWrite. I later started a comic with my friend, Cordie Nelson, called Become. Then during the pandemic I tried out for the DC comics Milestone Initiative and was surprised I was chosen to participate. I’ve been doing comics full time since 2022.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
What!? No. I do t come from a wealthy or even middle class background, and comics isn’t really a lucrative business. I’m constantly worried about money and I doubt my abilities to produce work at the level needed to succeed. But what else am I going to do be an accountant? Struggle is an essential part of human existence, and there is no inherent meaning to our actions. It’s best to do the thing that feels the most meanful to you.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a comic book artist, I don’t know if I’m at a point in my career to be known for anything yet and that feels oddly self aggrandizing. Though I hear that kinda thing is all the rage.
If I had to say I’d like to be known for my expressive characters, dynamic actions scenes, and balancing a kinda corny cartoonish storytelling with some insight in to the human condition.
What’s next?
I want to finish a graphic novel on my own, I’ve got a few things cookin. Oh and I’m really excited about the comic I’m doing , with Nathan Cayanan, called Stellar Remnant . It’s our Take on the sentai genre and I’ve always really wanted to work on a project like this. The plan is to releases it in July.
