Today we’d like to introduce you to Chastity
Hi Chastity, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I honestly can’t remember a time when I wasn’t singing. Singing was my first memory. That and then trying to stick something into a light socket as a baby and getting in trouble for it lol. My parents noticed early on that I loved to sing and also that I loved to dance. Music was always around me. Wherever and whenever there was a place for me to sing my dad made sure I was there performing. I was insanely shy so getting used to performing for crowds at an early was challenging. Lots of family parties, contests, and swap meets LOL. I spent my entire childhood honing in on singing, dancing, and then when I was 14 I wrote my first song and started playing guitar. I worked my whole life at my craft and spent most of it being in different bands…I even put out a solo album at one point lol. I am most proud of the band I’m in now. We’re called Heroine Honey. In this band, I have found my home as an artist. I think that’s something people often overlook when choosing what projects they are in. Everyone is always chasing something so they are quick to just be a part of SOMETHING that might get them noticed, but not realizing it’s important to find something that can help you grow and challenge you in ways that will help you become better at what you do. I’m rambling now, but I’ve always wanted to be part of something where I was fully expressing who I am, but also something that challenged and allowed me to really stretch my roots as an artist…while also being surrounded with likeminded individuals who love putting in the work, love rock music, and who I adore and are also a blast to be around. Heroine Honey is always growing and changing and we are always finding ways to challenge ourselves. I also think the support from my parents to keep doing music and the consistency of working at music and never giving it up is what brought me to where I am today with my band Heroine Honey.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Not easy at all. In a way, I sometimes feel the odds have been a bit stacked up against me lol but that’s something that has never really stopped me from doing the things I love and I’ve become rather resilient because of it. In a previous interview with Bold Journey I spoke a lot about what it’s like to be an Asian American Female lead singer of a Rock band. Just looking at that sentence you can see how I’m a rarity (for better or worse) in a genre that has always been
1. Heavily male dominated
2. Not exactly teeming with Asian lead singers
The road is still as hard as it always was for me, but I continue to do what I do because I love it, NOT because I’m trying to please today’s society.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am the Lead Singer of a Rock band from Las Vegas. I am most proud of the fact that we are always representing who we are and the genre we love regardless of what is considered “popular” in today’s society. What also makes me proud is that we all CARE about the foundation of music. We spend time really focusing on songwriting, working as a team, and we all put our blood sweat and tears into this band to be sure that we can always deliver. I also love that we are ALL very resilient. I found 3 very kind, ridiculously talented, and respectful individuals who believe wholeheartedly in creativity, expression, and who can also agree on the importance of putting in hard work to become a tight unit. I hit the jackpot with my bandmates and I never take that for granted.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I was VERY shy…yet also very dramatic and emotional lol. This isn’t sounding too far off from who I am now. Doh!
I’m an only child, but I grew up in a full house of cousins so I never felt alone. I spent a lot of my early youth in Music class, Dance Class, or practicing for hours on end inside, so I really enjoyed being outdoors and roughing it out there with my cousins. I loved to rollerblade, ride my bike, explore, and loved to go to the movies. I always loved to dress up. I loved fashion…Also Creative writing was my favorite. I always really loved to write and to tell stories. I always enjoyed time to myself though and enjoyed being alone at times. I’m like still that to this day.
