Today we’d like to introduce you to Blkchrist
Blkchrist, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born in Houston, Texas and moved to NYC at 2 months old. Growing up I was fixated with the arts. My mother and father REALLY supported anything my sister and I wanted to do artistically. I started off with Ballet and Contemporary dance.
From there on I went off to become a professional dancer and danced with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theaters Second Company, Ailey II.
Around that time I was producing and writing lyrics. Being in love with all the musicians I would blare through my headphones. Some being, Tyler, The Creator, Kanye West and Destiny’s Child.
Odd Future and Wu Tang Clan inspired me to create Brokeland, a group of artists who only put out in-house work.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Hasn’t been a smooth road at all. Not to sound cliche but I knew it would be a lot of obstacles. For one when I started dancing, everyone of my peers in regular school would call me gay. Even to this day I was just at a middle school reunion and this one girl who I wasn’t really close to like that said verbatim “I really did think you were gay back in school…”. That shit did not surprise me at all, I’m not going to lie. Only because I knew I was different. But the crazy thing is that kids of that age equated someone being different in any way with being gay. It was odd. That’s why I pride myself (no pun intended) with being yourself always. Never let anyone tell you what you are. And to believe in yourself wholeheartedly. I can stand strong now today and feel like I can accomplish anything. Mostly because I’ve been through the worst. No one can stop me.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a musician and dancer/choreographer. I self create everything. I like creating based solely on my emotion at the time. I guess I’m known for this one song called “GLOW”. Wrote it about this amazing rooftop my friends and I used to hang out on at the time. I personified the sun hitting the roofs pavement with a beautiful girls eyes. Because to me there were so many memories on that rooftop. We still go up there sometimes haha.
What sets me apart is that i’m willing to lean into the uncomfortable. I love to prove people wrong. I feel a lot of doubt from others. But I shall prevail.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
Being in my old brownstone inn Brooklyn listening to my dads music he made. That basement had some real innovative sounds in it.
